From Amulet to Coffin: The Journey of a BNF's Soul in the Magical Realm

Magic has always been a subject of fascination for humans throughout history. It has been depicted in various forms in literature, movies, and myths. One specific aspect of magic that often captures our imagination is its connection to death. The idea of magic being associated with death can be seen in many cultures and traditions around the world. In some ancient societies, magic was believed to have the power to control or manipulate death. Rituals and spells were performed to ensure a peaceful passing or to banish evil spirits that can cause harm to the deceased.

Throughout the month of June, Naylor participated in three different conferences in the circum-Caribbean, including a presentation on her Rose Hall project at the biennial conference of the Association of Caribbean Women Writers and Scholars, which was held on the San José and Limón campuses of the University of Costa Rica.

In order to offer some sense of the individual and collective lives of enslaved persons at Rose Hall, I presented possible interconnected elements of their lives. My work centers on revealing the names and selected experiences of the enslaved persons who lived, labored, and, whenever possible, loved at Rose Hall Plantation, she said.

Rituals and spells were performed to ensure a peaceful passing or to banish evil spirits that can cause harm to the deceased. In the realm of fiction, we encounter numerous examples of magic being used in relation to death. From necromancers who can raise the dead to witches who can curse someone with a fatal spell, the association between magic and death is prevalent in fantasy literature and movies.

Origins

In an attempt to cheat death, Annie Palmer: The White Witch of Rose Hall, steals a magical object known as The Well, setting off a chaotic chain of events throughout history. Now, heroes and villains from Jamaica’s mythology will collide in a brand new adventure with the fate of Jamaica and the world at stake.

A graduate of The New York Institute of Technology in 2004, Kurt worked over the next decade to become one of Jamaica’s most sought after Assistant Directors.

With seven feature length films on his resume for directors ranging from Idris Elba to Reinaldo Marcus Green to Cary Joji Fukunaga, Kurt picked up the Director’s hat in 2010.

Now building a list of commercial work for clients including UNICEF, Scotiabank, Visa and MasterCard, he has also directed multiple music videos for artistes such as Christopher Martin, Romain Virgo and The NoMaddz with a specific focus on story driven imagery.

The winner of both the “Best Local Film” and “Viewer’s Choice” awards at GATFFEST 2018 for his short film “Origins”, Kurt’s narrative work has been presented at the UN, Canada, England and Africa as he continues to build a strong reputation as a storyteller.

"Origins" is deeply personal project, that is also very unique for Jamaica. A twist on the typical Caribbean folktale. My genuine hope is to revive an interest in our people's history and past heroes, mythological or otherwise.

“I can see her on one of the house’s balconies; it is not the one-off of this room because it is situated at the back of the building. Her doorman is standing behind her. She gives her orders for the day and asks questions, keeping an eye on everything, but she is bored. She needed another slave to come into her bed at night, and again experience the burning passion and fury of the senses until she was bored again. A short week at the end of which her foreman would stab the lover that ceased to entertain her, and bury him in some lost corner of the forest. Soon after, the same scenario would start again: she always needed new bodies, new embraces. Everyone on the plantation knew what fate awaited the chosen one, and yet, none resisted, not one tried to flee!

One example of this is the concept of the Deathly Hallows in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. The Deathly Hallows are magical objects that are closely tied to death. The Elder Wand, one of the hallows, is believed to be the most powerful wand in the wizarding world and grants its owner the ability to conquer death. This theme of using magic to defy death is a recurring motif in the series. Another example can be found in the world of voodoo and African diaspora religions. In these traditions, magic is believed to have the power to communicate with the spirits of the dead and gain their guidance or assistance. Practitioners of voodoo may perform rituals and spells to connect with deceased loved ones or seek protection from malevolent spirits. Despite the allure and fascination surrounding the association of magic with death, it is important to remember that these are fictional or mythological representations. In reality, death is a natural and inevitable part of life and cannot be controlled or manipulated through magic or any other means. Magic, fascinating though it may be, remains a product of human imagination. While it can be a source of inspiration and wonder, it is essential to distinguish between fiction and reality, especially when it comes to matters as profound as life and death..

1. Samantha - 2 stars - I was really disappointed with "Magic bnf death". The story felt disjointed and confusing, making it hard to follow along. The characters lacked depth and development, making it difficult to connect with them. Additionally, the writing style was choppy and inconsistent, which made reading the book a bit of a chore. Overall, I found the book to be underwhelming and not worth the hype.
