Initially, the villagers were frightened and suspicious, unsure if this mysterious force was friendly or malevolent. However, it didn't take long for the little witch to win over the hearts of the villagers.

Spell Scroll

A spell scroll bears the words of a single spell, written in a mystical cipher. If the spell is on your class’s spell list, you can read the scroll and cast its spell without providing any material components. Otherwise, the scroll is unintelligible. Casting the spell by reading the scroll requires the spell’s normal casting time. Once the spell is cast, the words on the scroll fade, and it crumbles to dust. If the casting is interrupted, the scroll is not lost.
If the spell is on your class’s spell list but of a higher level than you can normally cast, you must make an ability check using your spellcasting ability to determine whether you cast it successfully. The DC equals 10 + the spell’s level. On a failed check, the spell disappears from the scroll with no other effect.
The level of the spell on the scroll determines the spell’s saving throw DC and attack bonus, as well as the scroll’s rarity, as shown in the Spell Scroll table.
Spell Level | Rarity | Save DC | Attack Bonus |
Cantrip | Common | 13 | +5 |
1st | Common | 13 | +5 |
2nd | Uncommon | 13 | +5 |
3rd | Uncommon | 15 | +7 |
4th | Rare | 15 | +7 |
5th | Rare | 17 | +9 |
6th | Very rare | 17 | +9 |
7th | Very rare | 18 | +10 |
8th | Very rare | 18 | +10 |
9th | Legendary | 19 | +11 |
A wizard spell on a spell scroll can be copied just as spells in spellbooks can be copied. When a spell is copied from a spell scroll, the copier must succeed on an Intelligence (Arcana) check with a DC equal to 10 + the spell’s level. If the check succeeds, the spell is successfully copied. Whether the check succeeds or fails, the spell scroll is destroyed.
How do spell scrolls work?
Spell scrolls are one use consumable items in Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition that allow characters to cast the spell contained within the scroll without expending a spell slot.
There are a lot of rules and conditions around using spell scrolls. We’ll take a look at them in this post.
Personally I (and many other DMs) find the rules as written around spell scrolls somewhat limiting so I’ll also introduce you to some of the common homebrew rules that have evolved around the use of spell scrolls in D&D games.
However, it didn't take long for the little witch to win over the hearts of the villagers. With her sweet smile and mischievous charm, she quickly established herself as a beloved figure in the community. Children would eagerly await her visits, hoping for a lesson in magic or a glimpse of her enchanting spells.
What are Spell Scrolls?
In DnD 5e, spell scrolls are magical items that allow magic users to cast the spell on the scroll without needing to provide material components or use a spell slot.
This is pretty massive actually, as spell slots are precious resources!
Material components for some of the larger hitting spells can be hard to come by and worthy of a quest in their own right.
The words on a spell scroll are written as a mystical cipher, unintelligible to most normal folk.
Once used, the words on the scroll fades and it crumbles to dust (DMG, pg 200).
Spell scrolls produce the effect of a real spell and range from relatively common cantrip scrolls right up to legendary artifacts containing the most powerful 9th level spells.
Their cost and abilities reflect the power of the spell they contain. The rarer and more powerful scrolls have proportionally higher spell save DCs and Attack Bonuses.
You can use this table below to check the power, rarity, DC and attack bonus of a spell scroll you wish to use.
I’ve included a suggested price for spell scrolls depending on level. Note, I used the Magic Item Rarity table (page 135, DMG) as a basis of determining cost of scrolls.
It’s worth mentioning that “spell scrolls” are different to “scrolls”, such as the “Scroll of Protection” (yes, I know, confusingly similar names).
The main difference is that scrolls such as the “Scroll of Protection” don’t entirely mimic spells in their full capacity, and they can be used by anybody, caster or not.
As her reputation spread, the little witch became a symbol of joy and wonder in the village. The local stores started selling merchandise inspired by her, including hats, broomsticks, and magic-themed toys. Even the mayor proclaimed an official day in her honor, hosting a magical festival where villagers could witness her spellcasting skills firsthand. While the little witch's presence has brought happiness and excitement to the village, not everyone is thrilled about her existence. Some skeptics argue that her magic may bring danger or that she could be a fraud attempting to exploit the villagers. However, the majority of residents remain enchanted by her, believing that her magic brings only positivity and delight. As the years go by, the little witch continues to thrive in the woods, spreading her magic and enchantment to all those she encounters. Visitors from neighboring villages come far and wide to catch a glimpse of her mystical abilities, further solidifying her status as a folk legend. In the end, whether you believe in magic or not, one thing is certain – the little witch in the woods has captured the hearts of an entire village and left behind a legacy of wonder for generations to come..
