Column: Detroit Lions fans can relax now that they know the curse is over

Relax Lions fans, I am here to assuage your fears, calm your souls, temper your anger.

I realize you are but helpless pawns of a franchise that seems to have wasted another opportunity at redemption with a particularly puzzling draft over the weekend.

A quarterback and tight end in the first round? No middle linebacker? Who is going to block for the QB? The list goes on.

I cannot explain it. I won't try.

I cannot promise you that what I have to say is convincing, or even logical. Yet, I'm going to try to explain how this weekend's draft not only is going to be successful in the long run but might even turn this franchise around.Bear with me on this.

The last time Detroit won an NFL championship was in 1957. People act like football wasn't invented before 1967, the year of the first Super Bowl, but it was. And Detroit was pretty good at it.

Quarterback Bobby Layne led the Lions to the championship, with Tobin Rote filling in during the title game due to a Layne injury, and because they're the Lions, they traded him in 1958 to Pittsburgh. According to legend, Layne cursed the team on his way out of town, saying the Lions "would not win for 50 years."

If championships are the measure, he was right.

Not only that, but the 50th year of the curse, the last one, was last season, and you know what happened then -- 0-16! And you doubted the curse.

Follow me here for one more minute. The Lions hit rock bottom -- failed picks, lost playoff games, a Hall of Fame running back who retires early, paralyzed star players, a death on the field, etc. -- and the curse has expired.

The team hires a black general manager the same year a black president is inaugurated, and the first pick in the draft, the No. 1 overall selection, is quarterback Matt Stafford, who graduated from Highland Park High School near Dallas, Texas -- THE SAME HIGH SCHOOL THAT BOBBY LAYNE (and Doak Walker, another Lions great) ATTENDED.

(Not only that, but Stafford played high-school baseball with Clayton Kershaw, the first star player for the Great Lakes Loons in Midland who now pitches for the L.A. Dodgers.)

I think we've come full circle, don't you?

This is the sign I've been looking for all along. Some type of symbol, or karma, or something, that will not only end the curse but bestow some kind of good fortune on the Detroit Lions.

I know it doesn't make any sense, but what about this franchise does? It's not much, but I'm going with it. Besides, that's all I've got .

. oh, and the fact that the Ford family got possession of the Lions on the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, and that Stafford's high school, Highland Park, also had as a student John Hinckley Jr., the man who shot and tried to kill former President Ronald Reagan.

Hinckley failed. Let's hope Stafford doesn't.

Reviews for "Black Magic Coffee: A Journey of Awakening Your Senses"

- Emily - 2 stars - The Black Magic Coffee pods were a major disappointment for me. The taste was bitter and way too strong, even after I added milk and sugar. It left a weird aftertaste in my mouth that I just couldn't get rid of. The packaging was also problematic, as the pods were difficult to open and often leaked grounds into the cup. I had high hopes for these pods, but unfortunately, they did not deliver.
- David - 1 star - I cannot understand the hype around Black Magic Coffee pods. After reading so many positive reviews, I was excited to try them out. However, the taste was incredibly bland and lacked any complexity. It was just a basic, average cup of coffee that I could have gotten from any generic brand. On top of that, the pods kept getting stuck in my coffee maker and caused a mess. I won't be purchasing these again.
- Sarah - 2 stars - I was extremely disappointed with the Black Magic Coffee pods. The smell was quite off-putting, almost like burnt rubber. As for the taste, it was exceptionally bitter and left an unpleasant aftertaste. I tried adjusting the water-to-coffee ratio, but nothing seemed to make it bearable. The pods also did not work well with my Keurig machine and caused several clogs. Overall, a subpar coffee experience that I do not recommend.
