The Salem witch trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. The trials resulted in the execution of twenty people, with several others dying in jail. The Salem witch trials were sparked by a combination of religious fervor, social tensions, and hysteria. Puritan beliefs and fears of the supernatural fueled the belief in witches and the idea that the Devil was actively working to undermine the puritan community. The trials began with accusations made against three women in the small town of Salem Village. The initial trials were marked by the use of spectral evidence, which allowed the court to admit statements and testimonies from alleged victims who claimed to see the accused witches as specters or apparitions.
Alex Merkin directed House of the Witch which seems perfectly in line with the rest of his resume as a director. Most of the movies he’s done are in the horror and/or thriller genre and he clearly has a knack for it. The screenplay was written by Neil Elman who also wrote I Spit on Your Grave 2 (2013).
