Mediocre at best, it didn't shine as bright as the.. Sun, in the box office but it was charming and quaint, it wasn't made by larger animation co. Like Disney ,DreamWorks, or Universal but by a smaller Spain located studio. And for such a smaller studio, had nice designs, animation, and the textures were surprisingly high quality.

Also it had a slight darkish undertone to it and the adult jokes made me chuckle more than once.

I saw it in English , But I recommend watching it in Spanish with English Subs (If you don't understand Spanish.) Since the Eng. Voice acting wasn't good. The English voices don't match the corresponding characters personalities at all and have no real emotion to them and react blandly , it was annoying but the story is alright, your basic detective story. Its also set in the "The Bugs" Universe from that old animated bug movie so that was very interesting to see.

Really wish they would have touched ground on Inspector Sun's backstory a bit more, His wife was also a detective but was killed during a job, He also apparently lost one of his legs to the same person who killed her but these are only mentioned in small sentences and aren't brought up a lot at all and aren't to about, so the viewer is left slightly confused How did he become World Famous?

Why do his police buddies hate him so much and don't want him around?

What did the Red Locust do in the first place that caused Sun to hunt him down?

Ah, and finally. The killer who did it in the first place- Was NOT shown at all before they found out about them, they were a mere background character standing around and didn't even seem to care for the case at all, nobody even tried talking to them in the first place to get more info out UNTIL THE VERY END OF THE MOVIE

The point of detective and mysteries is having to guess which person the detective spoke to that may have killed the victim, and use what little info they scrape from that sourcing to build a ground around the other suspects making the viewer need to put evidence and evidence together from each corresponding suspect and compare what each suspect that was spoken to was doing on the night of the death, why they were doing that and "Hey isn't that a little.. Suspicious?" Not "Okay you all clearly didn't do it." Before realizing they never even met the real culprit in the first place and they're just now meeting the culprit during the last 20ish minutes of movie. That's not how mysteries work.

Also holy crap I wanted to punch Sun when he was interrupting his sidekick when she was trying to ask serious questions and would ignore her completely if she brought up actually good points. Like.

TALKING. Let her TALK this time dude?? She wants to prove herself but you're doing everything in your power to stop her from trying to impress you. Its because of HER in the first place that they caught this culprit since he's so stupid and ignorant.

Frankly unimpressed but impressed at the same time.

I'm sure this studio can go very far if they can produce better storied animated movies. Just do some work and read through your scripts and plot before making the final product and you'll be fine.

For now, I hope the small amount they made back from it didn't kill them off right away as a company. I want to see them make more of these.

Shanghai, 1934. In a world of insects parallel to that of humans, the police are the spiders, - probably because if they grab you with their 7 legs they have a hard time escaping. And Inspector Sun is the best of them all. Obviously, like any good policeman, he has a lethal archenemy, the fierce and very evil red lobster. When the inspector decides to retire, he embarks on a flight in which a murder occurs. Veteran Inspector Sun (voiced by Ronny Chieng), a lone spider, leads his final mission against his archenemy Red Lobster, before embarking on a well-deserved retirement. His vacation aboard a Pan Am Clipper plane between Shanghai and San Francisco ends abruptly when millionaire Dr. Spindelthorp is found murdered. Throughout the investigation Sun is accompanied by an admiring young fanatic, he's not thrilled to have a companion in tow, but that's very much in tune with the need to explain things to the audience as we go. And the main suspect is the Black Widow, who is consequently locked up. As a seven-legged spider, Sun has his hands, or rather his legs, busy trying to find out who did it and why. Inspector Sun has his work cut out for him tracking down his archenemy Red Locust, a supervillain who believes in the hive mentality; "Long live the swarm" is his mantra, while Sun prefers a more individual approach when it comes to insect philosophy. What begins as a routine case for Sun will ultimately decide the fate of humanity. Thus the fate of the world of insects remains in the hands - or paws - of the notorious police inspector.

The current interest in detective films has given us some unconventional ones worth watching, so here the kids have their own super-detective: Inspector Sun, being based on the Samuel Goldwyn award-winning screenplay. An original rather than imported premise starring Inspector Sun, a Hercule Poirot type of detective including his mustache and classic clothing, he is an arachnid who is searching for clues in 1934 Shanghai, this animation that originally came from Spain, but which has been picked up and dubbed for family audiences in the U. S. That means we have a lot of precedent; We're remembering the type of storytelling that created Charlie Chan, Sexton Blake, famous writers like Sax Rohmer, Agatha Christie and others, bringing up this colorful film aiming to translate this detective energy to a wide audience of all ages. And even from a childhood point of view, recalling classic cartoon movies like Scooby Doo when it comes to the lost art of solving crimes. Here Sun boards a passenger plane heading to San Francisco and in its cargo a parallel universe of all kinds of insects is created, but when there is a murder, he has to discover which of the various suspicious characters he knows is responsible and, therefore, Of course, there is the ordinary meeting of the main suspects in the crime and finally, after much deliberation, Inspector Sun/Poirot will decide who the murderer is. All of these twisted criminal events lead to a spectacular finale, with a swarm of giant lobsters attacking Alcatraz Island being one of the best parts of the film.

This fun, original and funny family film was nominated for the Goya award for best animation in 2023. It is a Spanish production well and professionally made by director Julio Soto Gurpide, he believes that children should have their own artistic cinema, but keep them away from the usual superheroes and science fiction tropes and this 'Inspector Sun and the Curse of the Black Widow (2022)' could be a good start; acceptably directing the film in an atmosphere of a crime novel in the purest style of Agatha Christie that is reminiscent of her most popular novels, and even the inspector himself is a reflection of the mythical Hercule Poirot.

This a cut above most animations in terms of color and character, a mystery film that should entertain young and old alike. And although the adaptation sometimes leaves some practical questions unanswered, it turns out to be an acceptable and passable entry in the 3D animation genre that nevertheless failed at the box office.

It's undeniable that the old serialized detective adventures remain thrilling romps. It's also true that some of them are very hard to watch because of the amount of gross racism and stereotyping that they contain. Even watching the greatest cinematic Chinese American hero, Charlie Chan, is tough once you realize it's Swedish actor Warner Oland in yellowface.

So for adults hoping they can share some of that delicious period design and stylish antics without having to recoil at shameful accents and orange peel teeth, animated whodunit comedy Inspector Sun is the perfect replacement.

The script by Rocco Pucillo clearly is woven out of the threads of that bygone era of dastardly villains, quirky but charismatic gumshoes, valiant sidekicks, femme fatales, and a certain pre-war stylishness. It all begins with Inspector Sun (Chieng), a copper whose antics garner him newspaper headlines and the ire of his chief. He's also lost a leg, which brings him down to seven: Yes, Sun is a spider, and everyone in this adventure is an insect, arachnid, or bug of some kind. They live, as bugs do, alongside us, and so when Sun is unceremoniously ousted from the force after yet another botched investigation, he decides adventure awaits in New York. His mode of transportation: the miniature compartments reserved for creepy-crawlies on a flying boat. This is, after all, the Golden Age of travel, where everyone wore suits or dresses, there were jazz bands in the dining room, luggage was monogrammed, and there was a corpse that met a premature end. Luckily for everyone, Inspector Sun is here to save the day!

Well, except that he's a bumbling fool, a preening dolt in a fancy suit with an immaculately waxed pencil mustache. The only creature alive that has more faith in Sun than Sun is his unwanted new assistant, Janey the hyperactive jumping spider (voiced with suitable verve by Kleimo), and the only person who needs Sun to solve the inevitable in-flight murder is the titular black widow (Greer) who, even more inevitably, is in the hot seat for the murder of her tycoon husband, Dr. Bugsy Spindlethorp (Geer).

Inspector Sun takes all those tropes and gives them fresh life that will make little kids want to don a fedora and start talking about life on these mean streets – even if Sun wouldn't wear so gauche a piece of headwear. Much of the comedy is derived from his idiocy and eventual somewhat redemption, with thrilling action sequences and a good handful of poop jokes thrown in for good measure. Well, what do you expect when the pilot is a fly?

Its former, fuller title of Inspector Sun and the Curse of the Black Widow gives clues as to aspirations to make this the first strand in a web of intrigue for Inspector Sun. Honestly, that wouldn't be a bad thing. This first film is a delight, a giddy old-school serial adventure romp that will introduce kids to the wonders of vintage cinematic detectives.
