Through rituals and spells, they are able to tap into this power and use it to their advantage. Purple magic is often associated with healing and transformation. Purple magicians are said to possess the ability to heal ailments and injuries, both physical and emotional.

Arcane Tradition

In ages lost the early mortals combined dance, chants and jewels to perform the most ancient form of modern magic, rituals. After many centuries of refinement the contemporary wizards who choose to master this art are known as purple mages. Purple mages are seen as both dangerous cultists and some of the foremost advanced researchers of the nature of the weave and how it interacts with mortal will to form magic.

Purple mages study ancient beings and outsiders to help grasp the truth of how magic connects us all together both cosmically and individually. This path of knowledge often isolates the purple mages from society however this by no means means that they don't participate or desire to be part of a community.

Networks of purple mages are bastions of lost knowledge and arcane wisdom. It is not uncommon for adventurers to seek out these communes to gain their aid in dismantling magic or even in pursuing magic thought to be lost to history.

If one wishes to become a purple mage they will have to seek the guidance of an elder purple mage or the tutelage of an outsider willing to share the practice of ritual magic.

Ritual Savant

When you take this tradition at 2nd level, you begin your journey towards mastering ritual magic. You choose two spells with the ritual tag from any spell list that you can cast and add them to your spellbook, these spells count as wizard spells for you.

Additionally, all spells with the ritual tag can be added to your spellbook as long as you can prepare them. If the spell is not on the wizard spell list you can only cast that spell as a ritual.

Dark Idol

At 2nd level, you have crafted a dark idol to aid you in ritual magic. The idol is a small object that can be carried in a bag or on a belt, and which you can summon over the course of a short or long rest.

While you have the idol with you, the time to perform a ritual spell is halved for you. You can also store a spell within the idol thats spell level is no higher than your proficiency bonus, the spell remains in the idol until you finish a long rest, after which it fizzles out of the idol.

A creature holding a the idol can use their action to call upon the power stored in it, the spell is cast upon use, using your spellcasting modifier. Once the charged idol is used, it breaks or disintegrates and cannot be used until you summon it again.

  • Fiendish. You can speak, read, and write Infernal. Additionally, you gain proficiency in the Persuasion skill.
  • Primal. You can speak, read, and write Primordial. Additionally, you gain proficiency in the Nature skill.
  • Eldritch. You can speak, read, and write Deep Speech. Additionally, you gain proficiency in the History skill.

Magical Channeling

When you reach 6th level your proficiency with rituals is such that you can always channel as much energy into the spell as you are capable of wielding. When Ritual Casting you can chose to cast the spell at a spell level up to the highest level spell slot you are capable of casting. As normal when Ritual Casting no spell slot is expended.

Additionally, you gain the following benefit according to the dark idol type you had chosen from your Dark Idol feature;

  • Fiendish. Fiends binded to your service via spells such as summon lesser demons have disadvantage on saving throws to break your control over them.
  • Primal. You can understand and communicate simple ideas with beasts even if you do not share a language with them.
  • Eldritch. While you are conscious you cannot be surprised. Additionally, if a creature within 30ft of you is looking at you, you are alerted to that creatures presence.

Ritual Arts

At 10th level, your knowledge of performing rituals gives you greater insight to the inner workings of the weave and how to better make use of its magic. You gain the following benefits;

  • Any gold costs associated with casting a ritual spell (Such as material components) is halved for you.
  • You can use your dark idol as replacement for any material components that have no gold cost for casting ritual spells.
  • When you complete a ritual you retain some of the energy used in the casting. You gain temporary hit points equal to your wizard level after you cast a ritual spell.

Altar of the False Idol

At 14th level, your practice of ritual magic has excelled to the point of mastery giving you insight into the false idol ritual.

As an action, you place your dark idol in an unoccupied space, where over the course of the next 10 minutes your idol performs a special ritual, gathering the magic in the area around it and building up to utilize a special form of arcana.

Any creature that dies within 30ft of the idol with a CR of 1 or higher reduces the gathering time by 1 minute.

After the ritual is complete, choose one of the following rites to take place:

  • Rite of Summoning. A single creature of CR 5 or lower of your choice bursts forth from the idol. The creature is an ally to you and your companions and remains for 24 hours before fading and vanishing. In combat, the creature shares your initiative count, but it takes its turn immediately after yours. It obeys your verbal commands (no action required by you). If you don’t issue any, it takes the Dodge action and uses its move to avoid danger. The creature's appearance and creature type are dependent on your choice of idol type: Fiend for Fiendish, Elemental for Primal, and Aberration for Eldritch.
  • Rite of Traveling. A 6 foot by 6 foot portal appears where the idol sat. The destination of this portal can be any location you are familiar with and have physically been to before. The portal remains for 24 hours before closing, or can be closed earlier as a bonus action by you.
  • Rite of Sealing: You roll a number of d8's by expending 1000 gold for each die. If the result is above that creatures current hit points you can seal that creature within a willing creature or an object with a gold value equal to the gold cost for this ritual. The creature you wish to seal and the host must remain within 60ft of the dark idol to successfully cast this rite. A sealed creature remains sealed until the object it is sealed in is broken or their host dies in which they appear within 100ft of their host within 1d10 days. An object or creature can only seal 1 creature at a time.

Using this feature causes your idol to disappear after it is used.
