Magic Sands, or officially La’aloa Beach, is a popular white-sand beach in Kailua-Kona. It has come to be known as Magic Sands, or sometimes Disappearing Sands, because several times a year the sand gets washed out in storms, exposing the lava rock underneath. The sand gradually comes back, returning the beach back to the picturesque self. This is known as the best spot for boogie boarding on the Island. Those who are inexperienced will want to exercise caution though, as there is a strong surf break on the shore. There is a small rocky cove South of the beach that is a popular spot for scuba diving in calm conditions. There are several archaeological sites in the area. You’ll find the ruins of an Ancient Hawaiian temple (haukalua Heiau) to the South of the beach.

Turn right on Ali’i Dr. The beach will be on your left 0.2 miles up Ali’i Dr. The entrance to the parking lot is on the left at the South end of the beach just past the Kona Sugar Shack. The beach has restrooms, showers, picnic tables and lifeguard on duty. We recommend contacting organisations directly to get the most up to date information about their operations.

1) Sarah - 2 stars - I was really disappointed with the Ilai magic sands. The packaging made the product look so amazing and promising, but when I actually used it, I was let down. The sand was extremely dry and didn't hold its shape at all. It was impossible to build anything with it, and it just crumbled and fell apart as soon as I touched it. I followed all the instructions and tried different methods to make it work, but nothing helped. The colors were also not as vibrant as advertised. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this product.
2) John - 1 star - Ilai magic sands turned out to be a complete waste of money for me. The sand was anything but magical. It was messy, sticky, and just created a big mess wherever I tried to play with it. It didn't hold its shape, and the texture was unpleasant to touch. I found it difficult to clean up, as it stuck to my hands and table. The colors were dull and faded, not at all vibrant like in the pictures. I was really disappointed with this product and regret purchasing it.
