The art of Coldplay's magic: An analysis of their songwriting techniques

By admin

Coldplay Magic is a song by the British rock band Coldplay. It was released as the lead single from their sixth studio album, Ghost Stories, in March 2014. The song was written by all four members of the band, Chris Martin, Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, and Will Champion, and was produced by Paul Epworth. The lyrics of Magic are introspective and melancholic, reflecting themes of love, loss, and hope. The song is known for its catchy melody and the emotional depth of its lyrics, which have resonated with audiences around the world. Musically, Magic is characterized by its dreamy piano intro, ethereal vocals by Chris Martin, and a soaring chorus that builds up the intensity of the song.

Its simple, he’s talking about the love he had for a woman after a breakup, it’s heartbreaking and beautiful. He calls it as magic, an indescribable phenomena, something that people talk about but never really believe until they’ve witnessed it and it stays with you, this thing you can never really explain, I think its captivating to describe his love in this way, and still he claims even after they’ve broken up he still believes. Its beautiful.

While the obvious connections with suicide or alcoholism could be drawn easily, more subtly this song could be about someone who views the world through a negative lens constantly and how as much as the writer tries to show the beauty in the world, this person refuses to see it. Skiba sings it in a kind of exasperated way like He s tired of hearing this negative view constantly and just allowing that person to continue feeling the way they feel knowing he can t do anything about it.

Musically, Magic is characterized by its dreamy piano intro, ethereal vocals by Chris Martin, and a soaring chorus that builds up the intensity of the song. The instrumentation is simple, with a prominent focus on the piano, accompanied by subtle electronic elements and a laid-back drumbeat. The song’s music video was released alongside the single and features Chris Martin performing magic tricks in a vaudeville-style setting.

Magic

It's very simple, it's about a break up: "And I just got broken, broken into two" and the singer can't get over the other person: "And I can't get over, can't get over you" and the singer doesn't want anyone else: "I don't, no, I don't, no, I don't, no, I don't want anybody else but you" and he believes someday they'll be together again: "And if you were to ask me after all that we've been through "Still believe in magic?" Well yes, I do. Of course I do"

I think the last verse is saying that after all the turmoil that they've been through he still believes in the "magic" that is love as a whole.

I don't necessarily believe he means they'll get back together.

Disagree. I see "And I just got broken, broken into two" and his request to his lover "cut me into two" as him thinking he's found his "better half" or "person who completes him."

*nod* Why haven't more people figured this out? Poor heartbroken Chris Martin - can you blame him? It's Gwyneth freaking Paltrow.

It is about a couple who keep coming together and falling apart. The guy keep swaying from breaking into two to being next to you(her Significant other). And he doesn't understand why this happens, why every time they fight, then why does he still want her only and then why they always get together again and then again fall apart. Hence, he calls this whole sequence of events as magic. With her magic she can make her or break her. It is like he never existed to something like he is her life. And the guy questions sometimes his love, sometimes he thinks maybe because they fight so much, maybe aren't meant for each other, and then when they do get together, he feels she is one he wants. Hence, even though after all that he is been through, he loves her and believes such love can only be magical and hence he believes in magic.

I love this song. I was not a fan of midnight, and was extremely disappointed, but magic gave me a lot of faith that the album would actually be quite good. As for the meaning. Its simply taking about how in love he is with this other person, and he's both broken over the fact that its not mutual, but he's also in wonder with the beauty of their relationship and how he feels when he's around her.

I think this song describes the feeling of falling in love and the moments you share with that person. "Call it magic or call it true"

Agree with Sophia, very very obviously about Martin's separation. Really beautiful track though, my heart goes out to him because there's obviously still feelings there and so much emotion in this track. The last verse brings tears to my eyes.

To me this song is about a relationship and being so in love/infatuated with your significant other. Both of them have this chemistry or "magic" that is unexplainable, and you can't really explain it until you experience it.
