Chuck Brown: The Man Behind the Go-go Sound

Chuck Brown, also known as "The Godfather of Go-go," was an influential musician and bandleader from Washington, D.C. He was born on August 22, 1936, in Gaston, North Carolina, and moved to D.C. at a young age. Brown's musical career began in the 1960s as a guitarist, and he played with various jazz and R&B bands.

EVENTS

PoeFest is celebrating its 15th year commemorating the works of Edgar Allan Poe, and you can be a part of it all at multiple locations throughout Phoenix, Arizona this October. PoeFest has been a labor of love for a decade. When PoeFest first opened, it did so to just six audience members. With a packed audience on the third night, they knew they had something special. The fest includes mainstage productions of Poe’s short stories every weekend during the month of October with Poe’s stories rotating nightly. PoeFest usually culminates on Halloween night with ‘The Raven’ at Rosson House Museum. But there’s something extra special about PoeFest that makes Bookmans honored to be a sponsor!

STUDENT WRITING COMPETITION

Short Story Contest

1. All Arizona students in the 7th, 8th, and 9th grades for the 2023-2024 school year are eligible.
2. Home-schooled students are eligible.
3. Student authors must be residents of the State of Arizona.
4. The submission deadline is Midnight on October 29, 2023.
5. All short story submissions must be between 1,000 and 7,500 words.
6. The themes for short stories must stick to the genres of horror and/or mystery.
7. Stories must be original.
8. Authors retain all copyrights.
9. Revised previous submissions accepted.
10. Submissions can be made in electronic form ([email protected].) Word document or PDF formats only, please.

1. All submissions must include the email and phone number of a parent or guardian. All authors must have the permission of a parent or guardian to participate.

1. All submissions must include the author’s name, birthdate, school, and grade for the 2023-2024 school year. (Home-schooled students are welcome.)

1. One winner will be declared and notified via email and/or phone on October 31st, 2023. Public Notifications on social media pages will be posted after contact with winners. Initials of winners will be posted and the city they are from.

Poetry Contest

Brown's band, The Soul Searchers, became widely known for their energetic live performances, which often lasted for several hours without breaks. One of Chuck Brown's most well-known songs is "Bustin' Loose," released in 1978. The song became an instant hit and is considered a go-go classic. Its popularity led to a major-label record deal for Brown and The Soul Searchers, and they released several successful albums throughout the 1980s. Chuck Brown's influence on the D.C. music scene cannot be overstated. His music provided a unique sound that captured the spirit and energy of the city. He was not only a talented musician but also a beloved figure in the community. Brown's music brought people together, transcending racial and cultural boundaries. Sadly, Chuck Brown passed away on May 16, 2012, at the age of 75. However, his legacy lives on through his music and the numerous artists he influenced. His contributions to the go-go genre continue to inspire musicians and entertain audiences to this day. I was really disappointed with "Chuck Brown Mr. Magic". The plot was all over the place and I couldn't connect with any of the characters. The pacing was extremely slow and I lost interest halfway through. The acting was also subpar, with some of the actors appearing wooden and lacking emotion. Overall, it felt like a poorly executed film that didn't live up to its potential.

"Chuck Brown Mr. Magic" was a complete waste of time. The dialogue was cringe-worthy and the story made no sense. It felt like the filmmakers were trying too hard to be quirky and unique, but it just came off as pretentious and confusing. The cinematography was also lackluster, with uninspired shots that failed to capture any kind of emotion. Save yourself the trouble and skip this movie.

Overall, it was a forgettable film that didn't leave a lasting impression.
