The concept of embracing a rune bag is rooted in ancient Norse traditions and symbolism. Runes are a set of ancient alphabets used by the Norse people for writing, divination, and magical purposes. The rune bag, also known as the rune pouch or casting cloth, is a sacred tool used to hold the runes and facilitate their meaningful interpretation and guidance. Embracing a rune bag involves more than simply utilizing it for divination or magic. It requires a deeper understanding and connection with the runes themselves. In Norse mythology, it is believed that the runes were a gift from the god Odin, who sacrificed himself by hanging from the World Tree, Yggdrasil, for nine nights in order to gain wisdom and knowledge.

Magic Sands – Big Island, Hawaiʻi

There’s a small beach park here in Kona called Magic Sands Beach Park. The ocean frontage is only about 100 yards, but it sees a lot of use. Here’s an overhead shot of it from Google Earth.

The hotel next to it is named for the park, not the other way around.

So, why is it called Magic Sands? Because depending on the wave action, the beach can disappear. For instance, we moved here last June and for six months, the site was a popular spot to body surf, the gently sloping sand providing optimal conditions to get battered around by the breakers rolling ashore.

Then, in January of this year, we had a few storms come in from the West and . . .

Not as friendly for body surfing. I mean, people still body-surfed but took care to do so farther out from shore.

By the way, all of the photos are taken using the Nikon P900. I won’t put all of them in the body of the post, but there is a SmugMug gallery HERE as well as a gallery at the end of this post. As usual, one can click on the photos to see larger versions.

Anyway, we were assured the beach would eventually come back. It was a slow process . . .

March 23, 2017

There was enough sloping sand for people to now bodysurf a bit closer to shore. It looks nuts to me, but it also looks like fun.

Oh, yeah . . . here’s a video . . . or four. . .

You can see the waves bringing in the sand. It also looks like they take some sand back out, but obviously, they deposited more than they took away.

I say that because just two days later. . .

March 25, 2017

. . . even more of the beach was back. And yes, as they do every single day, people were body surfing. And, yes, it still looked like a veritable mess . . .

As this video shows, these are relatively calm waters . . .

April 12, 2017

A bit more sand . . .

. . . and just a few days later (with weird skies and light) . . .

April 14, 2017

And, a few days after that . . .

April 19, 2017

Them with a decent bandwidth can click HERE to see the 11MB full-size panorama. Notice that stitching a number of photos together can result in people disappearing from the composite.

May 19, 2017

Forward one month and you get little change. A bit more sand, a few less rocks visible beneath it.

Again, them with decent Internet speeds might be interested in the full-size panorama HERE (10MB).

May 26, 2017

A week later gave a good show . . .

As you can see, lots of sand back in . . . and decent waves to boot. You can see how much sand is being moved around.

Also, you can see the power of the rollers . . .

Here are a few more stills . . .

I have to believe the sand is getting into what I would consider unwelcome places. But, people seem to enjoy being rolled around.

June 3, 2017

And a week after that . . . Whiskey Tango Foxtrot happened to the sand?

Again, if you have a decent Internet connection and are interested in the full-size panorama, click HERE (10MB).

Now, you might think . . . “Uh-oh; another five months before the beach returns!”

June 12, 2017

Today — or, yesterday, depending on when this post goes up — the sand was back with a vengeance . . .

The sea was calmer, so the sand might hang around for a while . . .

And that’s the Magic Sands Beach Park.

For them who prefer a gallery . . .

That’s it. This post has ended . . . except for the stuff below.

General

BIG, direct ocean view! Watch incredible sunsets or dolphins and humpback whales play from your lanai! Wake up every morning to a beautiful ocean view, and fall asleep to the soothing sounds of the surf!

The studio offers a direct view of La’Aloa Beach (aka Magic Sands Beach), free and convenient parking, Wi-Fi, and a good-sized, functional kitchen. There is an outdoor BBQ grill at the back of the building, or at the beach park across the street.

This studio is just far enough out of town to see stars at night, yet close enough for easy access to all that Kailua-Kona offers. It’s four miles from the Kailua Pier, and about three miles to where town starts. And, they are flat miles! You could easily take the trolley the few miles north to the heart of Kailua-Kona, and walk back.

There are a few sets of snorkel gear so you can check out the clear Kona waters and the super-colorful tropical fish. It’s just a quick walk to at least three spots to get in and out of the ocean. You will see reef fish almost immediately, the further you go out, the better it gets.

Check us out, we could be your best “lei-over” yet!

Additional information

Kailua-Kona Village is an easily walkable three flat miles away. The pier is only four flat miles away. A trolley goes back and forth often, with a ten minute ride to town. Only a two lane road lies between your lanai and La`Aloa Beach – also called “Magic Sands Beach” because the sand comes and goes throughout the seasons. Guests often comment that our studio exceeded their expectations. We imagine it's because of the very recent extensive renovation (finished April 2015), and the beautiful professional upgrades! The Venetian plastered walls and ceiling, as well as the wood floors, give a wonderful feel to the studio. You will want to touch these walls! They are so smooth, professionally crafted with Italian plaster made from limestone and marble dust. The living room is combined with the bedroom, and the vintage Rattan furniture is charming and comfortable. A love seat, full-sized desk with chair, and the natural-edge mango wood bar and two bar stools all combine to make a functional, but uncluttered, great room. The queen sized bed is very comfortable, just as Goldilocks would like, not too firm, not too soft, with your choice of “thick or thin,” and “down or not” pillows. The kitchen has local hardwood (silky oak) cabinets, Grohe faucets, granite counter tops, plenty of storage, sharp knives, heavy stainless cookware – basically anything you would need. There is not a full oven, but there is a toaster oven, regular toaster, two burner electric cook top, microwave, coffee maker, coffee grinder, French press, and a full size refrigerator to make longer stays easy! All necessary dishes, utensils, kitchenware, and stainless pots and pans are provided. There is a grill at the back of the building, but it might be more fun to use the ones at the beach park across the street. There are even cloth napkins! The bathroom features a large tiled shower, toilet, counter space, and sink. Grohe faucet and tile floor. High quality bath towels, hand towels, wash clothes, and beach towels. Hand soap, shampoo, and conditioner are provided. And, Toilet Paper! (We know this sounds crazy, but we once stayed somewhere that provided 'starter' rolls. WOW, not the best experience.) There is even an iron and a small ironing board-just in case you need to look spiffy! Since we are on-island residents and "neat-nics,” we are proud of the fact that there are few places for bugs to get inside, nor many places for them to live. In our recent renovation, we were amazed how many nooks, crannies, and cracks we eliminated.

(You may want to invest in your own as we cannot guarantee fit.) The beach also has a volleyball court. Dolphins play just offshore at La`Aloa Bay (Magic Sands Beach) and are great fun to watch. This winter a mama humpback and her calf lolled just off shore for weeks! People were swimming out to see them, but as you can imagine, the life-guards at the beach "reminded" them that it is illegal to approach wildlife.
