I remember being a fresh-faced, beard-free new consultant making visits to stern, haughty organizations at which beards were infrequently noticed, if noticed at all. My clients were traditional alternative investment institutions, including private equity firms and hedge funds. Luckily, back then I didn’t have any inclination of wanting to have facial hair; otherwise, I would have been disappointed because my sense at the time was that it was forbidden. Plus, as the new guy, I certainly wasn't trying to be too disruptive. My perspective began to change when, during a meeting with several client contacts, I noticed one gentleman that did have a well-maintained, well-groomed business beard. As I think back on it now, it probably planted the idea of a beard in my mind. It accommodated the environment while also serving him: it was masculine and professional.
