The 2006–07 season saw Orlando start a run of six consecutive postseason appearances, as star center Dwight Howard blossomed and the Magic surrounded him with young talent and savvy veterans.

The Magic reached the second round of the playoffs in 2008 behind Howard and forwards Hidayet "Hedo" Türkoğlu and Rashard Lewis. The following season, with trade acquisition Rafer Alston filling in for injured point guard Jameer Nelson and sharpshooter J.J. Redick taking on a more prominent role, the team won 59 games and defeated the Philadelphia 76ers, the Boston Celtics and the LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers in the playoffs. It earned the Magic a second trip to the NBA Finals, where they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Following Howard’s trade to the Lakers in 2012, the Magic began a decade-long rebuilding process while developing notable talents like Victor Oladipo, Aaron Gordon and Nikola Vučević. The Magic’s luck seemed to improve after reaching playoff contention once again in 2019 and 2020, and landing top draft picks such as Mo Bamba, Jalen Suggs, Franz Wagner, and 2023 Rookie of the Year Paolo Banchero.

Magic open 2022-23 season with 2 road games, play home opener Oct. 22

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Orlando Magic will start the 2022-23 NBA season with two road games for only the second time in franchise history and will play their home opener Saturday, Oct. 22 against the Eastern Conference champion Boston Celtics, the Magic announced Wednesday.

The Magic will travel to Detroit for their opener on Wednesday, Oct. 19, setting up a matchup between 2022 No. 1 draft pick Paolo Banchero for the Magic and 2021 top selection Cade Cunningham for the Pistons.

On Friday, Oct. 21, Orlando will pay a visit to the Hawks in Atlanta in a divisional matchup that will feature Banchero and guard DeJounte Murray, a game made particularly interesting because of what happened when they faced off in a pro-am tournament in Tacoma, Wash., earlier this month. Murray dunked on Banchero, who has not yet played in an NBA regular-season game, and taunted him and then continued to engage with him on Twitter. Both players are from Washington, and this is Murray’s first year with the Hawks after Atlanta acquired him in a trade with the San Antonio Spurs.

The road travels will not end there. Orlando opens with six of its first eight games on the road.

The last road game in that string is the first NBA meeting between Banchero and this year’s No. 2 overall draft pick, Chet Holmgren, on Nov. 1 in Oklahoma City. That game is the team’s lone scheduled national TV game of the year, and it is on TNT. Three Orlando games are scheduled to air on NBA TV.

The Magic's longest home stand of the season will come in November, when the team plays seven in a row at the Amway Center from Nov. 3-16. That home stand will include the lone visit from the defending champion Golden State Warriors (Nov. 3) and the lone visit from Jabari Smith Jr. and the Houston Rockets (Nov. 7). Many insiders predicted that the Magic would select Smith with the top overall pick before the team selected Banchero instead.

Orlando's longest road trip will take place from Jan. 7-15, when they head out West on a trip that will feature games against the Warriors (Jan. 7) and two-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets (Jan. 15).

The Magic’s busiest months will be November, December and March, when they play 15 games each.

The team is scheduled to play on back-to-back nights 13 times (26 days). Orlando will also play six sets of games against the same team back to back, playing both home games against the Philadelphia 76ers starting the day after Thanksgiving on Nov. 25 and 27, both home games against the Toronto Raptors on Dec. 9 and 11, both road games against the Celtics on Dec. 16 and 18 and both games against the Cleveland Cavaliers on April 4 and 6. The Magic will play both of their road games in Indiana, on Nov. 19 and 21, and in Philadelphia, on Jan. 30 and Feb. 1.

The Magic will close their season with consecutive road games against the Brooklyn Nets (April 7) and Miami Heat (April 9). Orlando's final home game of the season will take place April 6 against the Cavaliers.

The only other time in franchise history that Orlando opened the season with two road games was in the 2013-14 season, against the Indiana Pacers and Minnesota Timberwolves. They finished that season with a 23-59 record.

The Magic finished with a 22-60 record last year, the second-worst mark in the NBA, and oddsmakers expect them to be one of the worst teams in the Eastern Conference again in the upcoming season.

BALLY SPORTS FLORIDA ANNOUNCES ORLANDO MAGIC BROADCAST SCHEDULE FOR 2022-23

Bally Sports Florida, the network home of the Orlando Magic, has announced plans to televise 81 Magic games during the 2022-23 NBA season.

Bally Sports Florida will celebrate opening night on Wednesday, Oct. 19, with a special hour-long “Magic Live” pregame show starting at 6 p.m. ahead of the 7 p.m. tip-off at the Detroit Pistons. Other game telecasts this season will be preceded by half-hour pregame shows and all will be followed by extended “Magic Live” postgame coverage, featuring expert analysis, news conferences, player interviews and more.

Magic games and programming airing on Bally Sports Florida will also stream live on the Bally Sports app, available on mobile and tablet devices (including iOS and Android), connected devices, and BallySports.com when fans authenticate using their pay-TV credentials. New this season, Magic games and coverage will also be available on Bally Sports+, the all-new standalone streaming subscription service from Bally Sports. Calling the action will be longtime Magic play-by-play announcer David Steele, celebrating his 34th season with the team, and former Magic player Jeff Turner, who returns as color analyst. This season marks 10 years together for the Steele-Turner pairing.

Dante Marchitelli will be back as host of “Magic Live” and lead in-game reporter, while former Magic Head Coach Brian Hill and ex-Magic forward Quentin Richardson return as studio analysts. Former Magic players Nick Anderson and Bo Outlaw will also appear on select pregame and postgame shows.

The popular “Inside the Magic” series returns and will feature player profiles and behind-the-scenes access to other aspects of the franchise and its operations – all designed to bring the fans closer to their favorite team. A season preview episode debuted Sept. 24, and future episodes will be announced ahead of their premiere dates.
