Once upon a time in a small village, there was a mysterious house that everyone believed to be inhabited by a witch. The house, known as "The Witch Gat Bouse," sat at the edge of the village, surrounded by an eerie aura. Its dilapidated appearance, with moss-covered walls and a crooked roof, added to the air of mystery. Legend had it that the witch who resided in the house possessed incredible powers, able to cast spells, brew potions, and communicate with spirits. Though no one had ever seen her, the villagers claimed to have heard strange noises emanating from the house at night - whispers, cackling laughter, and the occasional shriek. As the stories of the witch's powers spread, fear gripped the hearts of the villagers.

I get the effect they were going for with the text, but it cluttered it to the point of stepping on the story -- and honestly, in comics, we don t need the text boxes to serve as adverbial dialogue tags, as was frequently done here. As the stories of the witch's powers spread, fear gripped the hearts of the villagers. They began to avoid the path that led to the Witch Gat Bouse, fearing encounters with the witch or her evil enchantments. However, curiosity got the better of some, and they ventured close enough to catch glimpses of flickering candlelight through the dusty windows or the occasional whiff of unusual herbs and potions.

Last Halloween, Tarot, her husband, and her sister encountered the Spirit of Halloween in a park in Salem. Ever since that time, they have been cursed to appear as the stereotypes of their characters -- i.e. green-skinned witches, and a living skeleton man.

Now, in TAROT, WITCH OF THE BLACK ROSE #112, the season is upon them once more, and the three, along with their mother, plan to seek out the spirit and entreat him to return them to their original forms. But it's not going to be that easy. The spirit agrees to do so -- if he can be defeated in a game of monsters, taking place on another plane. And if he cannot -- then the entire population of Salem is to be his forever.

Tarot and company agree. and don't do so well. But this is the season of tricks and treats, and a wily opponent knows how to use both of those to her advantage.

Jim Balent's long-running fan-service series is one that doesn't take itself too seriously. The artwork is fantastic, but the plot varies from NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD to GHOSTBUSTERS in its tone. I was also thrown off by the lettering of the book, particularly with the text boxes, which seemed to have apostrophes and periods scattered throughout them rather than in the places that actually ended sentences. I get the effect they were going for with the text, but it cluttered it to the point of stepping on the story -- and honestly, in comics, we don't need the text boxes to serve as adverbial dialogue tags, as was frequently done here.

One special thing to note, this issue's Broadsword Girl model is Victoria Avalor, who Critical Blast readers may recall as our June 2017 Bombshell of the Month. Victoria is looking as lovely as ever in her pinup in this month's TAROT, WITCH OF THE BLACK ROSE.

Despite growing fear among the villagers, there were those who doubted the existence of the witch. They believed that the tales were merely exaggerated folklore fabricated over the years. Determined to uncover the truth, a young girl named Anna decided to explore the Witch Gat Bouse. Anna, driven by curiosity and a rebellious spirit, tiptoed up to the creaky wooden door of the house. She gingerly pushed it open to find herself enveloped in darkness. Holding her breath, she entered cautiously, her senses heightened by fear and intrigue. The creaking floorboards echoed through the quiet house as she crept from room to room, searching for clues. As Anna explored, she discovered evidence of the witch's presence. Tables lined with ancient spellbooks, cauldrons brimming with colorful potions, and walls adorned with an assortment of talismans and strange artifacts. The young girl marveled at the sight, her fears slowly replaced by a sense of wonder and fascination. Suddenly, the silence was shattered by a soft voice behind her. Startled, Anna turned around to see an old woman standing in the doorway. Her wrinkled face and twinkling eyes betrayed years of wisdom and knowledge. Looking closer, Anna recognized the same candles and herbs she had seen through the windows. Embracing her curiosity, Anna decided to speak with the woman, eager to learn about her life and powers. To her surprise, the woman was not a wicked witch but a wise sorceress who had dedicated her life to finding peaceful solutions and healing through her magic. She had allowed the rumors of her being a wicked witch to persist to protect her treasured knowledge from falling into the wrong hands. From that day forward, Anna and the sorceress formed a bond, acting as student and mentor. The villagers, who had feared the witch for years, soon discovered her true nature and grew to respect the sorceress for the wisdom she imparted and the miracles she performed. The Witch Gat Bouse no longer held a sinister reputation, but rather stood as a symbol of hope, magic, and the power of overcoming prejudices. The villagers became more open-minded, embracing the enchantment that surrounded their village and celebrating the sorceress's contributions to their lives. And so, the once-feared Witch Gat Bouse was transformed into a place of wonder and awe, reminding all who entered of the importance of looking beyond appearances and embracing the beauty of the unknown..
