Ed Emberly drawing materials?

What art materials are best for following the drawing instructions in Ed Emberly’s kids books? The drawings are additive so I’m stumped, since most kids art materials like crayons can’t achieve the additive effect. Thanks!

When I was a kid and Ed Emberly was teaching me to draw, I just used thin magic markers, but did you have a certain book in mind?

I think fine tipped coloured markers would be best. Pentel makes some nice sets. You may also want some nontoxic stamp pads for doing the fingerprint art stuff.

Ah, thank you for asking this question! I have had a half-formed Ask in my head for months trying to identify who Emberley was based on dim childhood memories of trying out his drawing techniques! I recognised his name instantly when I saw it, so thank you.

Like jessamyn, I think I probably used magic markers, but I expect coloured pencils would work as well - or a combo.

Another Ed Emberley alum here - I would go with colored pencils, since you can erase pencil if you make mistakes.

Are you a grown up?

Get yourself:

- a pack of Sakura micron pens ~ or ~ if you want to line with color a pack of Stabilo fineliners

Don't worry about erasing. Mistakes are part of drawing.

mrs. mmascolino is an elementary and middle school art teacher and uses Emberley books in her classes. She thinks the above suggestions are good ones.

Here’s another vote for Pentel markers from someone who is having a severe nostalgia attack right now. (Said nostalgia attack is constructed from easy-to-draw geometric shapes)

The Faber-Castell Artist Brush Pens are another good option if you're okay spending a little more for materials. One of their main benefits is that the colors layer well, and the brush tips are smaller than the Tombow brush pens, which can be a little more versatile. (Although, the Tombows blend better with water, if that's a consideration.)

Reviews for "Thim Magic Markers for Professional Artists: Techniques and Tips"

1. Sarah - 1 star - I was extremely disappointed with the Thim magic markers. The colors were dull and faded, making my artwork look so unappealing. The markers also dried out so quickly, even though I had barely used them. I had heard such great things about these markers, but they did not live up to the hype at all. I would not recommend them to anyone who wants vibrant and long-lasting colors.
2. Mark - 2 stars - The Thim magic markers were just average for me. The colors were okay, but nothing extraordinary. I found that they bled through the paper more than I would have liked, which ruined the clean look I was going for in my drawings. The markers also had a strange odor that lingered in my studio after each use. I think there are better options out there for professional artists.
3. Lisa - 2 stars - I had high hopes for the Thim magic markers, but they fell short of my expectations. The colors were not as pigmented as I had hoped, and they tended to smudge when I tried to blend them. The caps on the markers were also so difficult to remove and put back on, which was frustrating when I wanted to switch colors quickly. Overall, I did not find these markers to be worth the price and would not buy them again.
4. Michael - 1 star - The Thim magic markers were a complete waste of money for me. The colors were dull and washed out, even after multiple layers and blending. The tips of the markers also frayed quickly, making it impossible to achieve precise lines or details. I found myself constantly having to replace the markers because they ran out of ink so fast. Save your money and invest in better quality markers.
5. Emily - 2 stars - I tried the Thim magic markers for a school project, and I was not impressed. The colors were not vibrant enough, and they did not blend well together. The markers also had a tendency to bleed through the paper, which ruined the overall look of my artwork. I ended up having to redo my project with different markers. I would not recommend these markers for any important or professional work.
