At SFA s home football games, fans in the student section loudly bang their axe handles on a metal Purple Haze sign to show support for our beloved Lumberjacks and to rattle the opposing team. The building houses a planetarium, research laboratories, collaborative classrooms and makerspaces areas that allow students to collaborate and create prototypes.

Name The SFA Lumberjack

If you look at different colleges and universities around the nation, you'll find that most of them have names for their mascots.

  • Reveille (Texas A&M)
  • Mike the Tiger (LSU)
  • Bevo (UT)
  • Puddles (Oregon)
  • Big Al (Alabama)
  • Super Frog (TCU)
  • Otto the Orange (Syracuse)
  • Sparty (Michigan State)
  • Smokey (Tennessee)
  • The Ramblin' Wreck (Georgia Tech)
  • Albert and Alberta Gator (Florida)

And these are just a few of the college mascots that have proper names.

However, there are several colleges that don't give proper names to their mascots, and Stephen F. Austin State University is one of those schools. To my knowledge, he is just know as "The Lumberjack". And while there's nothing wrong with that, I think that it might be pretty cool to give a specific name to the SFA mascot.

There are a few different ways you can go about naming it. You can use alliteration. So, the name would start with an "L" like lumberjack (i.e. Lucky, Larry, etc.).

You can use something similar to "Paul Bunyan". I mean, a famous lumberjack name could be cool for a mascot.

Or, you can tie into the school's history. For example, "Stephen" for Stephen F. Austin? Hey, it could work.

But let us know your thoughts on the new name of the lumberjack in the comment section below. if he even needs a name at all. Maybe you think he should just use "The Lumberjack". Then, once we get this moving, maybe we could get it in the hands of the decision-makers at SFA, and the ball could start rolling. Hey, you never know!

He hasn’t let his popularity go to his mullet.

I was extremely disappointed with the choice of the Stephen F. Austin mascot. It just doesn't offer anything unique or memorable. The mascot is simply a generic lumberjack, which is already overused in various sports teams. I was hoping that the university would come up with something more creative and representative of our school's spirit and values. Unfortunately, this mascot feels uninspired and lacks any sort of appeal.

As an alumna of Stephen F. Austin, I was really hoping for a mascot that would leave a lasting impression. However, I find the choice of the lumberjack mascot to be quite underwhelming. It feels outdated and uninspiring. I believe there were other options that could better represent our university and engage the students and fans. I wish the committee had put in more effort and creativity into selecting a mascot that truly embodies the spirit of Stephen F. Austin.

While I appreciate the effort put into choosing a mascot that represents our state's history, the lumberjack mascot still falls short for me. It feels cliché and lacks originality. I think Stephen F. Austin could have chosen a mascot that better captures our school's achievements and aspirations. The lumberjack is just too generic and doesn't stand out amongst other mascots. It's disappointing to see such a lack of creativity in this aspect of our university's identity.

I have to admit, the Stephen F. Austin lumberjack mascot does not impress me at all. It feels outdated and fails to capture the energy and enthusiasm of our students and fans. I was hoping for a mascot that would create a sense of unity and excitement at sporting events, but the lumberjack just doesn't have that effect. I believe it's time for Stephen F. Austin to reconsider their mascot choice and explore more innovative options that can better represent our university's values.
