The dark witch's sacrifice: a tale of power and redemption

By admin

She covets to be my dark witch. From the moment she laid eyes on me, she knew she wanted to possess me, body and soul. Her desires, twisted and dark, were fascinated by my otherworldliness, my mysterious aura that beckoned her into the depth of darkness. It consumed her, this burning desire to be by my side, to explore the abyss of our shared demons. But what she fails to understand is that I am not easily conquered. I am not a mere plaything for her wicked desires.

My first encounter with the figure of a witch in popular culture apart from those in kids movies like Disney s Sleeping Beauty and M-G-M s The Wizard of Oz, or in books like Tomie dePaola s Strega Nona and Roald Dahl s The Witches was in a campy scene from Oliver Stone s 1991 bio-pic, The Doors, depicting Jim Morrison played by Val Kilmer and one of his lovers, a Wiccan witch a character played by Kathleen Quinlan, and based on the rock journalist Patricia Kennealy, who reportedly married the singer in a Celtic handfasting ceremony, in 1970. The series as a whole aims to avoid easy formulas and, instead, to exhibit the heterogeneity and individuality of modern-day witches, Denny told me recently, adding, I m not pinning these women down.

She covets to be my dark witch

I am not a mere plaything for her wicked desires. Though I may be drawn to her like a moth to a flame, I possess a power unmatched, a strength that cannot be tamed. I refuse to be charmed into submission, for I am the harbinger of my own fate.

Lana Del Rey has recorded a new version of Donovan‘s “Season of the Witch” for the upcoming Guillermo del Toro film Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and the trailer, which features the song, was released Monday (Aug. 5).

The remake of Donovan’s 1966 hit sounds like classic LDR — a timeless take that’s fueled by the “Love” singer’s romantic, whispery falsetto.

“I have admired Lana’s music for a while now and felt in my gut that she would run with ‘Season of the Witch’ — that she would use her alchemy to transform it,” del Toro said in a statement. “She is a great artist and has been an amazing partner with us in this adventure. It is an honor for me to have met her.”

More than a quarter century later, the often paradoxical grab bag of clichés tied to the contemporary figure of the witch is not that far off, I think, from those shown in Stone’s movie. The witch is often understood as a mishmash of sometimes contradictory clichés: sexually forthright but psychologically mysterious; threatening and haggish but irresistibly seductive; a kooky believer in cultish mumbo-jumbo and a canny she-devil; a sophisticated holder of arcane spiritual knowledge and a corporeal being who is no thought and all instinct. Even more recently, the witch has entered the Zeitgeist as a figure akin to the so-called nasty woman, who—in the face of a Presidential Administration that is quick to cast any criticism as a “witch hunt”—has reclaimed the term for the feminist resistance. (This latter-day witchiness has often been corralled to commercial ends: an Urban Outfitters shirt bearing the words “Boss Ass Witch,” say, or the women-only co-working space the Wing referring to itself as a “coven.”) The muddled stereotypes that surround witches nowadays are, in the end, not so very different from those used to define that perennial problem: woman.
She covets to be my dark witch

Her coveting of me, while flattering, stems from her own lack of purpose and strength. She sees in me the darkness she longs to unleash upon the world, to wreak havoc and chaos. She envisions us as partners in crime, united by our love for all that is wicked and forbidden. But I am not what she seeks. I am a force to be reckoned with, a storm waiting to strike. I have faced the demons within myself and conquered them. I have harnessed the power of my own darkness and turned it into something beautiful, something that cannot be corrupted. She may covet to be my dark witch, but she does not possess the strength required to walk in my shadow. She is but a plaything, a fleeting love, destined to be consumed by her own desires. She may long to be a part of my world, but she is not ready to face the darkness that resides within her own soul. And so, I shall remain unyielding, a temptress in the night who refuses to be possessed. I am a creature of darkness, but I am also a beacon of strength and resilience. I will not be her dark witch, for I am my own ruler, a queen of the shadows..
