Closed Magic Lantern strip club selling its Rte. 20 roadside sign

MONSON — Christopher Brunelle knows he is looking for a very specific buyer.

His sign advertising the Magic Lantern — for 60 years a neon beacon for Route 20 travelers promising exotic dancers and topless entertainment — is more than 20 feet tall. It’s a landmark on the town line with Palmer.

“It’s not like you are going to put it up in your backyard,” Brunelle said.

The Magic Lantern sign will be a challenge to move.

“You are going to need a truck and a crane to get it out of here,” Brunelle said.

The Magic Lantern, in business since the 1960s, closed more than a year ago and the landlords have leased the space to Dazed Cannabis for a dispensary, Brunelle said.

Brunelle and his wife, Kimberly, bought the club in March 2020 just before COVID shutdowns crippled the industry. He reopened briefly under pandemic conditions with dancers performing wearing facemasks.

Now, he is now selling off what’s left of the Magic Lantern.

He put the “Exotic Dances Lounge” on Facebook Marketplace Wednesday. He’s gotten some inquiries, but not for people who want to buy the sign.

“It’s people who want T-shirts or memorabilia,” Brunelle said. “It’s mostly nostalgic stuff.”

It is famous for the changeable letters used to promote “Amateur Nite.”

The sign has been photographed with the Stanley Cup and the late “No Respect” comedian Rodney Dangerfield.

The asking price is $20,000.

The club has had its issues with the town over the years, for instance, following a shooting in the parking lot in 2021.

Reviews for "Insider Secrets: How to Get the Cheapest Rates for Entrance to the Magic of Lights Display"

1. Mark - 2 stars - I was really disappointed with the rates for entrance to the magic of lights display. While the lights were nice to look at, I felt that the ticket price was extremely overpriced for what was offered. The displays were not very impressive and there was very little to do or see beyond the lights. I also found it frustrating that there were additional fees for certain attractions within the display. Overall, I don't think it was worth the price and I wouldn't recommend it to others.
2. Sarah - 1 star - The rates for entrance to the magic of lights display were absolutely ridiculous. I've been to similar light displays in other cities that were much more affordable and offered a far better experience. The entrance fee was exorbitant, and once inside, there was very little to do or explore. The displays were lackluster and the entire experience felt rushed and underwhelming. I wouldn't recommend wasting your money on this attraction.
3. Alex - 2 stars - I had such high expectations for the magic of lights display, but I was sorely disappointed. The ticket prices were way too high for the quality of the display. The lights were pretty, but they lacked creativity and uniqueness. I also found it frustrating that there were additional charges for certain parts of the event. Overall, I regretted spending money on this experience and would not go again.
