This movie does take place after season 3, so for the full effect of story line being intact you want to watch the show up till then before seeing the movie, though it really isn t necessary.

My Little Pony has become a very popular television show initially for children, but enjoyed by people of all ages. I too am one of the people who find true happiness in this series for so many reasons. For instance this show is the ultimate lesson giver on how to make friends, be true to yourself, be kind to others, accepting all people, despite their differences and above all it can teach you about better ways to handle situations that can be applied to real life. This show is TRULY for everyone. There is a controversy about the "Bronies", knocking men for loving this show, and I think it's ridiculous. Anyone who thinks men shouldn't watch this show needs to watch it themselves because it could teach them a thing or two.
The main characters of MLP:FiM are Twilight, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, Apple Jack, and I would definitely say Spike. All characters have completely different personalities and appearances and are all extremely good friends, and realistically so. They disagree and fumble just like people do in real life, but the greatest thing is that together they all overcome their fears and differences always making new friends along the way. MLP showed me that you can forgive and befriend even your worst enemy.
So, to all the parents and guardians out there wanting their children to watch the most beneficial show with their children, this IS the show to pick. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry, it will teach you life lessons, character, and above all even bring you and children or friends closer together.
My personal favorite character of this show is Trixie Lulamoon (the Great and Powerful), she is a unicorn. I not only love her mystical appearance and her snooty attitude, but I adore that even though she gives off that she feels better than everyone else she doesn't really want to cause anyone harm and that underneath it all lies a good pony worth getting to know.
Now there are quite a few sub-characters, often only made popular by the public. Such as Derpy Hooves, who I personally find truly adorable. A lot of parents were outraged saying that they made a "retarded" pony. I would personally like to address this because it bothers me. Firstly it bothers me that they would assume Derpy is mentally challenged and then call her retarded, and second that Hasbro would agree to remove her. Derpy is in my opinion and observation clumsy and cross-eyed like myself and how that would offend anyone is beyond me. Even if Derpy was announced as a challenged pony what is wrong with that? Are parents saying that it's unacceptable to feature a pony with a disability? I'm not entirely sure, but either way I am pro-Derpy.
A lot of episodes are really great and meaningful, and some can be random and fun for the pure enjoyment. Currently my favorite episode is the Flutterbat episode which considering out of the main ponies Fluttershy is my favorite this was a pure joy for me to watch.
