During your adventures in Fire Emblem: Fates, you will be able to download and undertake side missions between main story chapters in the game. Some of these map missions are free, while others are paid DLC - and many of them usually include exclusive rewards like special class-changing items.

For those of you playing in Classic (permanent death) mode, keep in mind that the same rules apply here, and units that die in a Xenologue are lost forever. If you want to grind your Support levels for weaker units without worrying about losing them forever, fight online and invade other player's castles.
