youngin

I think that "youngin's", in the context of the sentence below, means "youngers". 1) Am I right? 2) Why the apostrophe in "youngin's"?

"Julia, you're on lifeguard duty for baths for the youngin's, and you're also responsible for getting them dressed in the morning."

Thanks a lot for your help!

I think you must have heard this rather than read it, but what you heard was almost certainly young 'uns in which the apostrophe indicates a missing sound (w) rather than a missing letter, 'un ( pronounced as a schwa or murmur vowel + n) being a colloquial and dialect form of one (/wun/). When one laughs at somebody's joke, for instance, one often ends up with the compliment, "That's a good 'un!"
As for youngers, that is a rarely used term that means the opposite of elders, i.e. the junior members of a religious or other formal group as opposed to the senior members in power.

I really appreciate your comments Arrius but, in fact, I read this word in "Step on a crack" by James Patterson (page 24). Let me write more context:
'I know, I know. Chores. Who needs them?' Maeve said. 'But here's my thinking. If you all work together, you can keep the apartment running for me until I get back. Okay, team? Then here we go. Julia, you're on lifeguard duty for baths for the youngin's, and you're also responsible for getting them dressed in the morning.'

With no other reference for youngin's, I believe he is using his own spelling for young'uns. Sometimes, with an abbreviation (although more often with an acronym, and even this usage seems to be disappearing), an apostrophe is used with the plural form.

As "young 'uns is derived from "young ones", it would seem to be a more suitable fit than "youngins", which, by the way, I have never come across before.

Youngin is an established slang word with lots of references to it in google. The apostrophe comes from it being written sometimes as youngin´ with an apostrophe for a g that people think is missing, so the plural is made as youngin´s.

Youngin would appear to be a word used in the States, and one that I have never heard or seen till now.

This looks to be one of the more remote reaches of the great AE/BE spelling divide.

The OED doesn't mention youngin, but has this to say about youngun.
. also in colloquial form young 'un, youngun = YOUNGSTER
1922 JOYCE Ulysses 418 Collar the leather, Youngun.
1940
C. MCCULLERS Heart is Lonely Hunter I. iv. 56 A youngun was sitting on the banisters. He had seen her somewhere before.
1981
J. D. MACDONALD Free Fall in Crimson xix. 219 Here and there are little groups of younguns who know what an original idea tastes like.

I Imagine it's pronunciation as much as spelling, panj.

I also imagine that the youngin' (with apostrophe) version happens by analogy with the non-standard pronunciation/spelling of nothin' etc.

Youngin' is an alternate spelling for Young'un, which does come from "young one", and is rural western and southern US speech for "child." "Ever Christmas my house is plumb full o' grand-kids," said the old farmer. "Between my three daughters, we done got us a creeper, a crawler, two lap-chile's, and a couple of yard-young'uns."

As for "youngers", it should be "the younger," singular, "the young" collective (sometimes called "non-countable") plural.

The church elders complained that there was too much dancing going on in the church social hall, but the young disagreed. Pliny the Elder was the father of Pliny the Younger.

They use this in some Scottish, Irish and English dialects as well with the same meaning. I don't think there's much need to get wrapped up with how it should be spelled though as it's a slang term and as far as I'm aware there's no standardised spelling.

Since the existence of youngin(') has now been authenticated, and the author is an American, I would suggest that the term shows German influence like so many usages in the States (dunk from tunken, Gesundheit when you sneeze, and do it already! = Mach schon!). Junge is German for boy and has a plural in -ns, die Jungens, hence, perhaps, the youngins

This word is from German. If you went back 1500 years to SAXON ENGLAND and yelled in modern english "younguns come here" everyone would know exactly what you said.
