Review: Deep breathing is a tool that I have taught my son to use to deal with frustration, anger, or sadness. This lesson was even more supported when Daniel Tiger taught him to, “When you feel so mad you want to roar, take a deep breath and count to four.” We use this mantra often to help him refocus when his brain is getting fogged by an emotion. Additionally, some of Trent’s favorite books are interactive picture books like Press Here! or Don’t Touch This Book. My Magic Breath combines these connections in Trent’s life into one! It not only promotes meaningful breathing in a fun way, it turns it interactive through the illustrations and second person narrative. This is going to be a book that is easily going to jump into our picture book regulars, and I cannot wait to be able to be able to tell Trent to “Think about what happened. Now keep it in your mind! Close your eyes and take a deep breath in. Now blow out your breath…”

Teachers’ Tools for Navigation: Anxiety is something that many teachers now find themselves talking to their students about because so much pressure and stress are on kids these days either socially, academically, or at home. My Magic Breath will be a perfect book to introduce at the beginning of the year then use throughout the year to help students understand and deal with their emotions.

Discussion Questions:

  • When do you feel the most anxious? Angry? Scared? Sad? Try using mindful breathing during these times.
  • How do you picture your magic breath would look when you blow out during these times? What about a happy time?

Reviews for "The Magic Breath: Elevating Your Yoga and Meditation Practice"

1. Alex - 2 out of 5 stars: I found "My Magic Breath" to be quite disappointing. The illustrations were beautiful, but the message was too simplistic for my liking. The book emphasized the importance of taking a deep breath to calm down, which is something most children are already aware of. I was hoping for more depth and nuance in the storyline. Overall, I felt like this book was a missed opportunity to delve into the complexities of emotional regulation.
2. Sarah - 1 out of 5 stars: "My Magic Breath" was a complete letdown. It felt like a generic self-help book disguised as a children's picture book. The message was overly repetitive and lacked any meaningful substance. The illustrations were visually appealing, but they couldn't make up for the lackluster content. I would not recommend this book to anyone looking for a thought-provoking or engaging read for their child.
3. Jake - 2 out of 5 stars: While the illustrations in "My Magic Breath" were undoubtedly captivating, I found the storyline to be quite underwhelming. The concept of using breath as a tool to manage emotions is valuable, but the execution fell flat. The text seemed disjointed and lacked a coherent flow, making it difficult for children to fully grasp the intended message. Overall, I was disappointed in the book's failure to explore the topic in a more engaging and informative manner.
4. Emily - 2 out of 5 stars: I had high hopes for "My Magic Breath," but it failed to meet my expectations. The repetitive nature of the text made it feel like the book was solely aimed at very young children, missing an opportunity to engage older kids as well. I also found the illustrations to be overly simplistic, lacking the vibrant and imaginative quality I was hoping for. Unfortunately, this book fell short of delivering a meaningful and memorable reading experience for both children and adults.
