Dragon Ball: The Magic Begins (七龍球 神龍的傳説 Qi long qiu Shen long de chuan shuo, "New Dragon Ball: The Legend of Shenlong") is an unofficial 1991 Taiwanese movie about the Dragon Ball franchise, with a few differences.
Okay, make that a lot of differences. The movie actually is something of an adaptation of the Dragon Ball franchise, but using different names for the characters, but otherwise is at least somewhat faithful, even if the story is more based around the Curse of the Blood Rubies movie.
An Ultimate Edition version was released in 2007, with remastered picture and sound, as well as new computer effects.
Compare with Dragon Ball: Fight for Victory, Son Goku!, a more faithful unofficial Korean live-action adaptation, and Dragonball Evolution, the 2009 American live-action adaptation which received massive negative reviews.
Her chemistry with Dragon Chen's Goku was one of the highlights of the film. The character of Master Roshi, the wise old martial arts master, was portrayed by actor Huang Shih Tsung. Tsung's portrayal of Master Roshi was well-received, capturing the character's eccentricity and wisdom. Yamcha, a bandit-turned-friend of Goku, was played by actor Tom Chung. Chung successfully portrayed Yamcha's comical and cunning nature. Another important character in the film was Oolong, the shape-shifting pig. Actor Craig Williams took on the role of Oolong and brought a comedic touch to the character. The villain of the film, King Horn, was played by actor Yu Chi Liu. Liu effectively portrayed the ruthless and power-hungry nature of King Horn. Overall, the cast of Dragon Ball: The Magic Begins did a commendable job in bringing the beloved characters from the series to life.
