The Magic of Play: Exploring Palo Alto's Magical Playground

By admin

The magical playground in Palo Alto is a place of wonder and excitement for children and adults alike. Located in the heart of the city, it is a vibrant space that brings joy to all who visit. The playground is specially designed to spark imagination and creativity, with whimsical structures and colorful installations. As soon as you step into the playground, you are transported to a world of magic and enchantment. The main feature of the playground is a towering castle, complete with turrets and a drawbridge. Children can pretend to be knights, princesses, or even wizards as they explore the castle and its many secret passages.

Because Abe’s dream of founding One Day began with his playground experience, I want to share a story about a mom in Palo Alto, California, who wish to create a socially inclusive playground for all ages and abilities began with her need to find a place where both of her daughters could play together and with family and friends. Olenka Villareal’s younger daughter Ava who is developmentally disabled has very different needs from her older daughter Emma, but both girls needed a safe, accessible play space. Doctors told Villareal and her husband that Ava would benefit from vestibular motion and that movement would help her brain and muscles develop, but with 34 playgrounds in Palo Alto, there was not a single one that was a usable and welcoming experience for their daughter. Because Silicon Valley is the innovation capital of the world and because Villareal is a problem solver by nature, she began researching for playgrounds designed to be used by a wider range of children. She found that ADA compliant playgrounds left out most children and people with autism, visual and hearing impairments, cognitive disabilities, and physical problems. There were not even playground manufacturers that were designing structures for kids in wheelchairs or for kids with autism who have a greater need to process sensory information at their own speed. Instead of turning away from this challenge, Villareal did just the opposite. She gathered together a variety of playground users at her kitchen table and included everybody, even the kids whose parents wanted them to learn empathy and kindness by having a playground for everyone. She calls this “Intentional Design” and this is what equals an Inclusive Society. We have to be aware that many designs unintentionally leave a portion of the population out and that this can amount to many people. During the course of seven years, Villareal was able to attract friends, neighbors, designers, and community members to join her to create a Magical Bridge Playground which is enjoyed by other 25,000 visitors each month. Features of the Magical Bridge Playground in Palo Alto include a Kindness Corner, a Community Playhouse, a Laser Harp, musical programs and events, and a volunteer program for local teens called Kindness Ambassadors. It is truly a playground for everyone for all parents want their children to belong and to be included. Now there are plans to build seven more Magical Bridge Playgrounds in local Bay Area communities and to design more inclusively at the local K-5 schools. In the words of Jill Asher, Villareal’s friend and business partner, “It’s important that the Magical Bridge Playground never gets pegged as a ‘special needs park.” There’s nothing special about needing to play.” You can learn more about the Magical Bridge Foundation at magicalbridge.org.

Amazing playground for babies! Love the multi-floor tree house. The slides are also the BEST in town (they’re even fun for the parents too)! :)

Magical Bridge Playground: A Place for Everyone to Play

It’s rare to find a place where everyone, regardless of age or ability, can come together and play. And that is why Magical Bridge Playground is such a special place. It’s designed to be inclusive of the 1-in-4 people amongst us who have physical / cognitive disabilities, autism, visual / hearing impairments, medically fragile, or are part of the aging population.

    The Story

The founder Olenka Villarreal wanted a playground where her disabled and non-disabled daughters could play with their friends. They had very different needs and she found that the existing playgrounds didn’t cater to these needs well. She gathered a team of volunteers together, created the vision together, fundraised, and made this a reality over the course of 7 years. The playground opened up in 2015 in Palo Alto, CA as a socially inclusive playground, where all are welcome. Now it has over 25k visitors a month!! Wow!

Olenka and her friend Jill Asher went on to create the Magical Bridge foundation, and Santa Clara County has allocated $10M in funds for more playgrounds like this!

    My Visit to the Playground

Here are some snapshots from my first visit to Magical Bridge Playground. Hint: If you go early in the morning, no one else is there and it’s having a whole playground to yourself!!

I love how colorful everything is and how many different play structures there are!

I had never seen these before!!

They have little descriptions on what the different play zones are, who it’s for, and the science behind them. Neat!

They have a bunch of different slides too. Slides are my favorite – so much fun to go down!

Omg the baby slide in the tot zone is too cute!!

Alright, that wraps up the photos that I took at the Magical Bridge Playground. All I can say is how impressed I am with this place. They put a lot of thought into making this a place for everyone. They collaborated with play experts, educators, therapists, families living with different disabilities, and landscape architects. They’re very conscious of the health and wellness benefits of play as well. It’s a magical place!

They also have other local authors and concerts this summer in the playground. Check out their Facebook page for the event line-up.

The success of this playground has led to even more of these Magical Bridge playgrounds being planned for around the Bay Area – with locations planned for Mountain View, Morgan Hill, Redwood City, and Sunnyvale.

But there is still a $1M funding shortfall to kick off construction of the Mountain View playground. So please consider donating to this nonprofit if you want to see this playground come to your city. I already made my contribution! You can donate here: http://magicalbridge.org/mtnview/

    Storytime Event

Also, I’ll be doing a storytime for my book Use Your Voice at Magical Bridge Playground in Palo Alto on Sunday, June 2, 2019 from 3-5pm. Check out the Facebook events page for more details and to RSVP!

Thank you for reading! Hope you have a chance to check out this place and get to experience it for yourself! The pictures do it no justice.

Children can pretend to be knights, princesses, or even wizards as they explore the castle and its many secret passages. There are also various interactive elements throughout the playground, including musical instruments and interactive sculptures. Children can unleash their creativity by making music or creating their own stories with the sculptures.

One of the highlights of the magical playground is a sprawling maze. With its twists and turns, it offers a thrilling challenge for those who dare to enter. Children can navigate the maze, searching for hidden treasures and secret paths. In addition to the maze, there are slides, swings, and climbing structures, ensuring that every child has something to enjoy. The playground is also equipped with safety features to ensure that children can play without worry. The magical playground is not only a place for fun and play, but also a space for learning and growth. Numerous workshops and activities are organized regularly to engage children in arts, crafts, and storytelling. This helps to stimulate their minds and foster their creativity. Families and friends can also gather at the magical playground for picnics and celebrations. The spacious picnic areas provide a perfect setting for enjoying food and spending quality time together. 1) Mary - 2 stars - I was really disappointed with my experience at Magical Playground Palo Alto. The equipment seemed old and worn out, and the whole place felt unclean. The staff was also not very attentive and seemed more interested in talking amongst themselves than ensuring the safety of the children. Overall, it just didn't live up to the magical and fun atmosphere I had hoped for. I wouldn't recommend it to others.
    2) John - 1 star - I went to Magical Playground Palo Alto with my kids expecting a magical experience, but we were sorely disappointed. The playground was extremely crowded, making it difficult for my kids to fully enjoy themselves. Additionally, many of the play structures were broken or in disrepair, which was a safety concern. The admission price was also quite high compared to other similar playgrounds in the area. Overall, I felt like it was not worth the money and would not visit again.
    3) Rebecca - 2 stars - I had high hopes for Magical Playground Palo Alto, but it fell short of my expectations. The play area was small and cramped, and there were not enough seating options for parents to relax and watch their kids. The staff seemed overwhelmed and there were long waits for the restrooms. The only redeeming aspect was the snack bar, which had a decent selection of food and drinks. However, I wouldn't recommend this place as a whole for a fun and enjoyable outing with kids.
