Isaiah Tivon Rasheed, a beloved son, brother and cherished friend to many, died tragically on May 17, 2023, at his home in New Orleans, LA. He was 26 years old. Isaiah was know for his loving nature, strong embraces, quick humor, gifts with plants, and eagerness to build deep connections and lasting friendships. He would do most anything for those in his "gang gang," which was how he referred to his beloved community.
Isaiah was born in Oklahoma City, OK to young parents who were eager for his arrival, Isaiah's mother, Karri Henning, went on to become a caregiver and nurse, and his father, Jamal Rasheed, was a self-described "professional weirdo" who worked as a cook and manual laborer for much of his life. The young couple raised Isaiah in Guthrie throughout his early years, but eventually the couple separated, and Isaiah spent some years in the care of his maternal grandparents, Barbara and James Dew.
During high school, the star athlete and team leader was known as a fun-loving and reliable friend. After graduating from Northwester Classen High School, he went on to study pharmacology at Southwestern Oklahoma State University, but his studies were cut short when he shot another young person and was incarcerated for 18 months.
Following incarceration, Isaiah spent a few years in Guthrie working construction and other odd jobs with his father. After that time, he focused on building a career supporting the launch and management of oil change centers in Oklahoma, Texas, and South Carolina.
In 2023, Isaiah landed in New Orleans in the midst of summer to live under the care of his aunt, Aesha Rasheed, whom he'd grown close with as they grievedhis father's death. In New Orleans, he built a life and community centered around his love of healing plants and working alongside other formerly incarcerated people also seeking healing. Isaiah spent time working with the Santosha Village, building communities with unhoused people, and as the Garden and Greenhouse Steward of Solitary Gardens.
Reflecting on their Connections with him, friends and loved ones described him as someone who was always prepared to help and offered his myriad skills in home repair and construction, woodworking, plant cutivation and garden wisdom, car repair, animal whispering, and child tending generously. Exemplifying the meaning of his middle name,, Tivon, which means "nature lover," Isaiah loved dogs, lizards, fishing, horses, mushrooms, and being outdoors for any reason. He was passionate advocate for growing and using magic mushroom psychedelics as a pathway for healing addiction and ancestral trauma.
When parting ways with loved ones, Isaiah always give a big, long hug and encouraged them to "stay dangerous."
Isaiah was preceded in death by his father, Jamal Rasheed; his grandparents Carey LaDon and Wanda Faye Rasheed; and his grandfather, James Dew. He is survived by his mother Karri Henning; his aunt, Aesha Rasheed; and his siblings, Jaden, Emani, and Emara Henning; Juaquin, Jameelah, and Jovanni Ramirez; Alexandra Rasheed; Austin Hart; and Ashura Rasheed. He is also survived by many chosen family members, including beloved ones in Oklahoma and New Orleans.
Memorial services for Isaiah Tivon Rasheed with be held in New Orleans, and in Oklahoma, he will be laid to rest in a green burial so that his body can return to the earth and become the plants and animals he so innately loved.
Isaiah's legacy will live on in the memories of his friends and family and will be missed by all who loved him. His service will be held on Thursday, June 8, 2023, at 2 PM at Ingram, Smith & Turner Mortuary in Yukon with burial to follow at the El Reno Cemetery.
