I don't know about you, but I've sure tried my share of behaviour management strategies throughout the years, from clip charts to golden tickets. Although I liked some more than others, they all had one thing in common: they were a little too complicated! And honestly, sometimes they weren't THAT complicated but they were complicated enough that I was not being consistent with them. thus they were not as effective as they could have been.

I get asked a lot if I use time out and the answer is yes, but only for really egregious behaviors like biting, hitting or being completely disrespectful to someone. The purpose of this study was to reduce the number of behavioral incidents and improve student engagement in learning to produce a learning environment conducive to academic success.

It was not known how and to what extent the implementation of "1-2-3 Magic for Teachers" would change the behaviors of disruptive students. The purpose of this study was to reduce the number of behavioral incidents and improve student engagement in learning to produce a learning environment conducive to academic success. The target population was kindergarten through eighth grade core and elective teachers at a charter school in a west-central southern state. Out of 49 participants, gender representation was 10 males and 39 females. The age range was from 23 to 58 years old. This ActionScience Research study utilized a mixed methods approach. The problem of student misbehavior was documented through negative behavior checklists, suspension and detention data, and grade level focus group interviews. Postintervention data indicated the implementation of "1-2-3 Magic" decreased negative student behaviors overall and thus allowed more time for classroom instruction. The elementary participants (K-4) showed significant decreases in three out of the five negative student behaviors. The middle school participants (5-8) showed decreases in five out of the five negative student behaviors. Suspensions and detentions decreased at both schools, and all participants professed the model to be valuable for effective execution of classroom management and discipline strategies. The results are encouraging because they are evidence that implementation of "1-2-3 Magic for Teachers" produces meaningful improvement in students' behaviors.
