Crystals, Numerology, and Witches: The Standard Guide to Holistic LA Wellness

LA is a far more diverse and complex than it commonly gets credit for. For every palm tree there’s at least one palm reader, and for every firm believer in surgical enhancements there’s an equally firm believer in spiritual ones (and the two are hardly mutually exclusive). Los Angeles is rife with alternative medicine practitioners, crystal experts, energy healers, and readers of everything from cards to stars. This is a magical city after all, a place where we like a little fantasy mixed in with our facts. For those of you looking for a little conjury with your “cure”, or those just looking to find some healing outside the norm, here’s a list of the very best healers and esoteric dealers in the city of angels.

House of Intuition is a veritable one-stop shop (three stops, technically, as they recently opened a third location in West Hollywood) for those serious about occult guidance. The store offers a selection of crystals, potions, candles, books, herbs, and oils, but what makes House of Intuition special is the laundry list of services offered there, including tarot, tea leaf, and palm reading as well as crystal, reiki, energy, and arcane healing. For those looking to learn, they also offer a host of classes and workshops through their Temple of Intuition program. A real resource for those looking to go deeper with their esoteric spiritual practices.

Arguably the hippest of Los Angeles’ metaphysical destinations, Spellbound Sky is the go-to for spiritually inclined artists, musicians, and various celebs (even LA icon Angelynne is known to pop in from time to time). The shop was opened by Mark Phillips and Martin Anguiano, who left careers in the fashion industry to pursue their passion for esoteric tools: namely high quality crystals, ritual candles, and essential oils, the items for which Spellbound Sky has become known. The shop also hosts workshops and classes, including their wildly popular weekly guided crystal meditations, led by “spiritual luxury” expert Jessica Snow. But it’s really the incredible variety of crystals and highly knowledgable and friendly owners and staff that make this Silver Lake store a must-visit destination for true seekers and new dabblers alike.

MAJA D’AOUST, THE WHITE WITCH OF LA

She’s not wicked, teenaged, or mad-mod, but Maja D’Aoust is the most well-known, and well-respected, witch in all of Los Angeles (you might recognize her from her magical cameo on this past season of Transparent). Popularly known as The White Witch of LA, D’Aoust holds a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, a master’s in Transformational Psychology, and also boasts over fifteen years of training in eastern medicine, acupuncture, the I-Ching, and a host of other esoteric sciences. She offers ritual services for weddings, funerals, and solstice and equinox events, is a published writer and frequent lecturer, and even performs live oracle readings at spots like The Smell and Pappy and Harriet’s in Joshua Tree with musician friends like Guy Blakeslee and Jeffertiti’s Nile. But her true speciality is alchemy: “[Alchemy] is the thing that runs through everything else in terms of concepts and philosophies. It contains within it elements of herbalism, healing, gnostic knowledge and yogic and marital arts. It’s kind of the bomb.”

LOUISE ANDROLIA, SPIRITUAL LIFE COACH

Thirteen years ago, Louise Androlia was in her early 20s and dealing with chronic pain and PTSD. This experience, and her subsequent recovery, led her to study energy healing and tarot. Now, over a decade later, Androlia is a sought-after life coach who incorporates her past and her esoteric studies into her practice (she even uses tarot as a tool for self-empowerment). In her words: “To me, a spiritual approach means that I will be working with the person as a whole; Mind, Body and Spirit and encouraging them to think of themselves in this way too. I believe that Life Coaching can give you a complete shift from feeling disconnected, overruled by fear, and scared of the unknown, to feeling present, empowered, and alive.” For those not ready to take the full life-coaching plunge, Adrolia also offers 90-minute single sessions, in person or over Skype.

Josh Siegel isn’t exactly who you expect to see when you walk into a store called Mystic Journey Bookstore on Abbot Kinney. The resident numerologist (one who studies numerical patterns to divine insights, a.k.a esoteric code breakers) at one of the most popular spiritual shops in Venice, Siegel cuts an unassuming figure—just a normal, albeit handsome, guy (he’s been on TV a bunch; this is, after all, LA). In fact when I went to see him for my appointment I’m pretty sure he was wearing something like a track jacket and jeans, and though I was probably expecting something more along the sheer tunic and beads spectrum, his numerology reading was thorough and very accurate. He cuts to the chase pretty quickly (no beads, no bullshit) and leaves you walking out of your appointment with not only a better understanding of yourself, but more importantly, a greater sense of purpose in moving ahead.

Before she wielded acupuncture needles, Leona Marrs had a slightly different career: singing and playing keyboards in now defunct post-punk band Pretty Girls Make Graves. That probably explains why she’s now the coolest acupuncturist in town, catering to the needle healing needs of the east side’s creative elite - musicians, photographers, and artists flock to Marrs in droves for help with pain, digestion, addiction, depression, and anxiety. Marrs, who holds a master’s degree and was formally trained in Tokyo, Seattle, and Shanghai, is also an experienced herbalist and specializes in detox and liver disease.

I was really disappointed with the Jet ice magic thread. The thread kept getting tangled and breaking while I was trying to sew. It was such a hassle to continuously rethread my needle and fix all the snags. The thread also wasn't very durable, as it started fraying after just a few uses. Overall, it was a waste of money and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
2. Mark - 2 stars
I purchased the Jet ice magic thread hoping for a good quality product, but was left disappointed. The thread had a strange texture that didn't glide smoothly through the fabric. It also had a tendency to knot up easily, which made it frustrating to work with. I found myself having to frequently stop and untangle the thread, which slowed down my sewing process. I would not choose this thread again in the future.

I had high hopes for the Jet ice magic thread, but unfortunately, it didn't meet my expectations. The thread constantly snapped while I was sewing, and I had to rethread multiple times. It was incredibly frustrating and made my sewing project take much longer than necessary. The quality of the thread was also subpar, as it started unraveling after just a few stitches, leaving me with loose ends that needed constant trimming. I would not recommend this thread to anyone looking for a reliable and durable option.

I found the Jet ice magic thread to be quite disappointing. It kept getting stuck in the sewing machine and causing jams, which required me to stop and clean out the machine frequently. This was a major inconvenience and affected the overall sewing experience. Additionally, the thread seemed to fray easily, resulting in weak stitches that unraveled easily. I would not repurchase this thread as it caused more trouble than it was worth.
