Expert hacks for registering your new LG Magic Remote

By admin

To register a new LG Magic Remote, follow these simple steps: 1. Make sure that the LG TV is turned on and in standby mode. 2. Press and hold the "Home" button on the Magic Remote for about five seconds until the pointer appears on the TV screen. 3. Select the "Device Connector" option from the navigation menu at the bottom of the screen.

I just tried it on my C2 (03.30.66 software ver) and it did work!

LG Magic Remote Replacement

Our 2022 48inch LG OLED TV came with this weird remote with a pointer that is terrible to control (way wild) and Mrs. Fivaz hates it.

Anyone ever figure out how to disable that function? There are fast/med/slow options but nothing that disables it that I can find. Hitting the up/down/side controls on the center dial will stop it, but that is always AFTER that pointer has reset the current show accidentally.

Anyone ever get their ROKU remote to run these TV's? We can't get the ROKU remote to power on/off or do volume but the TV says it is paired.

Anyone have a universal remote that they like? Target has a brand called One For All replacement for LG TV's, we've never heard of them. For $25, it may be worth trying it out to see if it fits.

I feel for you. We have a 2021 LG OLED but it has the "Magic" remote.

At least you have buttons. They used to make it without 90% of the buttons. I think samsung also did the same for some point in time. The Magic Remote adds an RF component i think so other older magic remotes have issues. I believe all LG's use the same basic IR signaling. So you should be able to use any remote control LG makes and just get one without the scroll pointer thing which is just plain Arrow keys. From what i read from others. I don't have a LG with magic remote. I haven't gotten that fancy yet. And if this is the case then you are in luck.

For example. https://www.ebay.com/itm/224876542864
Which Claims to be LG but i can assure you it is a knockoff 3rd party one. It is fully functional. And having 5 TV remotes for 1 TV. Being I've had a few LG TV's and always buy a 2nd or 3rd remote so i can lose one for a longer period of time. They pretty much all universally work. Sure some buttons do not work in the case of me getting a OEM one destined for Hotel use with a Portal button. Or an older one with no "Entertainment" menu so i can't load up the media bar to open built in netflix as an example.

When you look at the e-bay remotes. Make sure the picture has every conceivable button you want. Like I have some remotes with a dedicated Sleep timer button. Like this one. https://www.ebay.com/itm/114428141568
Where it drops other buttons but adds a sleep and TV button which i use regularly because i use the OTA tuner.

No joy, it "de-register"s the device then, when it registers again, you're still in that magic moment. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I'm not sure if you're supposed to re-register it.

This yt-dude de-registered his and was still able to use the remote without re-registering it:

For about 20-30 secs until it re-register itself. $(*$%&@#%&@%&&!@

One of the comments in that yt-page talk about getting the LG TV AKB76037605 remote instead. That's about $9 to $12 on amzn.

I have a prolly even older LG TV remote (AKB72915239) (about $7 at amzn) that actually works with my C2's settings-menus and Dashboard stuff.

I don't use (never user-agreed) LG's webos/channels/streaming stuff, so I don't know if it works with those apps, tho.

On my C1 I don't have to use the Magic pointer. I mostly ignore it and go my merry way in the menus with the directional pad.

You definitely don't have to use it, the buttons work, but the OP wants to disable that functionality entirely.

I suggest just getting a replacement remote like the sofabaton U1. Note it'll be IR rather than RF and won't work with the voice control stuff, though.

Missed this part.

Yes. I'm using the Roku 4k-stick on my C2 and the voice-remote buttons that came with it works with volume and power controls. edit: i never use the actual voice-control feature, so I dunno if that particular feature works.

My C2 does have a weird habit of prompting for some bogus "additional settings" with the Roku remote from time to time, tho. I just press Ok on the prompts.

As I threatened in the OP, I ordered the One For All Replacement Remote for LG TVs from Target to see if that is a cure. Our ROKU remotes are from an ULTRA which is pretty old now, I was hoping the LG would replace it completely, but after battling getting ACORN setup in the LG menu, we decided to keep the ROKU online for "just in case".

Gotta say, that YouTuber must have done some serious plonking around to get where he did, I'd never have had the patience to do that.

Also, Target and Staples do not carry universal remotes in their stores, online only.

Yeah, that's why Harmony died, the market isn't what it once was. HDMI CEC ate it up.

honestly, I don't know if the Roku's voice-control works with the C2 since I never used that feature ever.

To turn off ASBL, I bought a service remote from Amazon:

I haven't used it much, just to access Service Mode, and occasionally to turn the TV off, but it seems like a fully functional replacement. I think it's IR-only (the regular remotes have Bluetooth), and it doesn't seem to trigger any mouse-style movement.

I vaguely knew about the API, although not about that specific Python library, but I don't like plugging smart TVs into any kind of network. I don't want it updating firmware or downloading new ads. I want it to sit there and be a dumb display device. I've done a couple of manual USB firmware updates, which is a little more of a pain, but I can screen for what other people are saying about it that way. The actual process is basically: copy to key, plug key into TV, say yes to updating, wait a couple minutes.

I paid a little more than the current $7.34 for that remote, more like $10, but the benefit in not having to bring the TV online was worth far more than that to me. Plus, the experience also lets me recommend it to @Auguste_Fivaz, as I'm pretty sure it will do what they want.

edit to add: BTW, Auguste, this was said upthread, but just in case: you can completely ignore the mouse pointer. When you hit the mode key (for input or settings), the mouse pointer pops up, but if you then hit a cursor key, it disappears and you're navigating like with a normal remote. I do that for inputs all the time; hit the input button, press left or right a couple times, press select. Ignoring the pointer becomes easy with a little practice.
