(Var: TANkalcig) You might be tempted to touch the petals of this dark-as-night rose to see if they're as velvety as they appear. The extremely long-lasting blossoms have thick petals of intense garnet red with darker edges, carried on strong stems and displayed against glossy dark green foliage. The flowers hold their strong color and are superb for cutting. High mildew resistance is an added bonus. One of the darkest red roses ever produced. Hybridizer: Tantau, 2001

New State new garden and the love of The Darkest Roses

Jul 22, 2023 | By D

So, as a lifelong rose grower, I have had several gardens in several states. I come from a long line of rose experts and florists, who also grew privately for the trade. Just because you have grown before, doesn't mean you can't learn. I've had this wonderful Black Magic in zone 6-B for a season. I grow in large containers, and, eventually will plant. She took to the area very well. In three months she hit over four and a half feet. She blooms regularly and has showy stems that could go into an arrangement, or a long stem set. Due to weather changes, we keep her in a five gallon bucket, prepped for drainage and use a set up combination of sand, top soil, hummus and manure, and coir, and a touch of pearlite with bio amendment. B12 soak prep for 24 hours before transplant. Absolutely zero fall back. She's hearty, minimal black spot, although in this area even this does get a touch. Bone for calcium and root development vitamins are a must for all our bands/BR. All of mine are thriving, there are two canes that were cut back prior to shipment that have not really come back. She has three hearty canes, and her blooms are fantastic. I would love to see an own root version. We do containers as the weather can be unpredictable and this way we can move from sun area to under cover during severe weather. We are very happy with our Black Magic, she lives up to her name. We also have a Black Baccara that is in the same conditions and is also thriving. We use organic fungicide, and pest control. If you want a garden and don't have the space, do look into growing in buckets, you can fancy them up yourself, and these roses do so well in them, just be prepared for soil amendment and don't forget the mulch. Current Roses:
Black Magic, Black Baccara, Black Ice, Black Jade, Black Pearl, Ink Spots, Mr. Lincoln, Oklahoma. If it's gothic, it's for us.
Shipping was on point and well packaged. I'm on several rose forums, and there is a lot of preference to growers, my advice is to get what you want, do your best, and judge for yourself and your garden. I'm still learning about growing outside of temperate climates, and I'm very happy with my Edmonds Roses, I'm planning on more this fall.
