Criss Angel Mindfreak Platinum Magic Kit - "Does it Work?"
MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) – You've watched magic shows on TV, but have you ever wondered how they pull it off? With the Criss Angel Mindfreak Platinum Magic Kit, not only will you know the secrets behind the tricks, but you can perform them for your own audience! That's if it works.
I seek out Kevin Ives from our promotions department at WSFA, as he's long been fond of magic. He will take the kit home for a few weeks to learn some magic. The kit boasts over 250 magic tricks and comes with quite a bit of gadgetry. After several weeks of practice, his routine is ready and it's time to show off to some of his co-workers.
For Kevin's first trick, he attempts to push nails through a coin. He slides several nails through the black box containing the coin, but most of the audience is underwhelmed.
Kevin then moves to a card trick. Audience member Caleb Hawk chooses a number from a special deck of cards with a series of numbers on it. He picks number 53. He has to remove all cards with his number on it and return them to Kevin. Now Kevin reads Caleb's mind!
"I think your number is number fifty-three," says Kevin as he nails his mind reading attempt.
The curiosity of many in the audience rises. The next card tricks will grab their attention. Kevin asks Liken Hudson to inspect a deck of fifty two seemingly normal cards. Liken tells Kevin when to stop rifling through the cards. He stops on a nine of hearts; the audience can see it, be he cannot. Kevin shuffles the deck and her card should now be at the bottom.
Kevin says, "I've got the card and I've done it again so your card was the nine of hearts."
The crowd isn't fully on board, but Kevin turns the deck from a standard one, to one filled with the nine of hearts. That wins all of their attention, especially Liken's.
Liken exclaims, "Stop it! How did you do that?!"
Kevin then pokes a hole through a card in a plastic window, without breaking the plastic. He even returns a torn card back to its original look. And most impressive of all, he magically transports Liken's special nine, to underneath her purse in a different room!
"You guys! How did you do that?" says Liken in disbelief.
Kevin explains, "It's all about you selling it to everyone else. Because it might look simple, but if you're able to convince them, then it's going to work out."
So, was our audience sold?
Sports anchor Derek Steyer says, "Even though you know there's probably something to it, it's still neat to see it done without seeing how it's done."
Liken adds, "I was actually impressed. I found myself actually being 'wowed' so it was cool."
So, the Criss Angel Magic Kit gets a YES for this week's "Does it Work?" test!

Criss Angel lends his name to a magic kit, but who’s teaching the tricks?

Move aside, Mysto. Fall in line, Fantasma. There’s a new mass-marketed magic set in town. You’ve seen it on TV and at Walgreens. It’s the Criss Angel Mindfreak Platinum Magic Kit, and it sells for $30.

The kit doesn’t come with eyeliner or black nail polish, but it does offer some impressive stuff. Invisible thread, thumb tip, miniature silks, faux metal cups, a poker-size deck of playing cards—I wish the magic sets I received as a kid had props this professional. For $30, the kit is also a great value, though, not as great as the box would have you believe. “Over a $200.00 value!” it reads. As a former professional magician and former middle school mathlete, I can’t imagine how Angel’s people arrived at this figure.
The worst part of the kit is the instructional DVD. In the introduction section, Angel says, “The most important thing for you is to practice, have fun and make each mindfreak your own.” But how am I supposed to make these tricks my own when 90 percent of them have Criss Angel logos and photos on them?
And after his incredibly brief introductory comments, Angel seems to perform a disappearing act. Some guy I’m pretty sure isn’t Criss Angel teaches all the tricks. We never even get to see his face or hear his voice—though some verbal instruction would be incredibly helpful—but staring at those fingers, I’m confident it’s not Angel, creepy as that might sound.
Angel’s contribution to the instruction booklet is equally token (e.g., “Criss’ Thought: This is a strong MINDFREAK because the spectator believes you can ‘read’ their thoughts.”). Oh well. Magic set instructions are notoriously crappy, and for generations, kids have been figuring out what to do with magic props even if the tattooed and ringed celebrity behind them isn’t exactly pointing the way. I’m sure they’ll figure out what to do with these props, too. And when they do, they just might freak your mind.
Furthermore, by slowing down the pace of movement, Holger rune allows the audience to observe and appreciate the intricacies of each individual movement. This heightened attention to detail gives his performances a heightened sense of precision and accuracy, further enhancing the artistic experience. Overall, Holger rune's enactment of sluggish motion is a bold and captivating approach to dance.
It challenges traditional notions of speed and fluidity and encourages the audience to reevaluate their own relationships with time and movement. By incorporating deliberate movements and intentional pauses in his performances, Holger rune is able to create a unique and immersive artistic experience that lingers long after the performance has ended..

1. Jane - 2 stars: I didn't enjoy "Holger Rune Enact Sluggish Motion" as much as I had hoped. The storyline was confusing and hard to follow, and the slow pacing made it difficult to stay engaged. Additionally, the characters lacked depth and development, making it hard to connect with any of them. Overall, I found it to be a disappointing read.
2. Mark - 1 star: "Holger Rune Enact Sluggish Motion" was a complete waste of time. The plot was incredibly dull and unoriginal, and the writing style was bland and uninspiring. The author seemed to drag out every scene, making the book feel much longer than necessary. I would not recommend this book to anyone looking for an exciting and fast-paced read.
3. Sarah - 2 stars: I found "Holger Rune Enact Sluggish Motion" to be quite tedious. The slow motion scenes, while initially intriguing, quickly became repetitive and monotonous. The lack of action and suspense made it difficult for me to feel invested in the story, and the ending was unsatisfying. Overall, I was disappointed with this book and would not recommend it to others.
4. Michael - 2 stars: "Holger Rune Enact Sluggish Motion" was a slow and exhausting read. The author's attempt to create a unique literary style with the use of sluggish motion fell flat for me. The constant repetition and elongation of scenes made it hard to maintain interest, and I found myself skimming through paragraphs just to get through the book. The concept had potential, but the execution was lacking.
