Well, "pattonfan", you should know that any instrument is what you make of it. Whether it's a chintzey home organ, or your mouth.

I can suggest that as much as possible you choose an common open format for the files sfz for example, or Kontakt2 with wav files rather than embedded sound sets. Funmaker / Magic Genie/ Piper Autochord home organ VSTi.

These aren't really String Machines but they're not exactly Organs either, but every household in the 70's & 80's had one.

The Hammond Piper Autochord

Hammond Piper II

The Lowrey Teenie Genie

They're corny and chintzy, but I love 'em. I've some string and organ VSTi's but none of them are really all that close.

Believe it or not, my (minister) mom & dad have a working Lowrey Teenie Genie in their church as I type.
Corny and chintzy are understatements.

Some of these made it into Squids Rare Instruments collection, and some were part of Squids Tron collection (both sampletank format).

Thanks, Doug.
I actually have a Piper Autochord. And, as the things are as common as dirt, I'm sure to be getting the Piper II, Teenie Genie, and a Funmaker within a years time. So, If I want to make a sample set, is there a good guide to use regarding length, mics, mic placement etc.?

Androidlove, don't pay more than 50 bucks for any of these. Keep an eye on your local Craigslist and you'll find them for next to nothing, if not free.

what a cool idea!

regarding length, aren't the patterns mostly 1 or 2 bars?

regarding mics, mic placement etc, don't they have headphone outs?

i have an old lowrey "symphonic citation theatre" which sounds like instant "moon safari".

i'm in the process of setting up my new music room (i.e. not yet set up) and the old dear needs a bit of an overhaul (a stuck note - again - and dodgy sustain circuit) but i'll look into doing some samples.

Your best bet for suggestions on that is the sample forum here, or the SamplerZone forum (run by Chicken Systems). I can suggest that as much as possible you choose an common open format for the files (sfz for example, or Kontakt2 with wav files rather than embedded sound sets). This is as opposed to a format like Sampletank (not open) or Kontakt3 (won't work with K2 or earlier).

Thanks again, Doug. Will do.

Clueless, I forgot all about the headphone jack, I've never used it, I know it has one-I'm just not sure where it is! My Piper is in need of service, but they're apparently very easy to fix/ clean (I found a document on the web by a kid who knew nothing about organs fixing an non-working Piper)

Nononono.
You see, being that you're a Mike Patton 'freak', as your name states(number '1' to boot), I would imagine that you'd not care about the tool, because it's all how you use it. I was referencing Patton's 1996 solo debut 'Adult Themes For Voice" where the only instrument used is his mouth. Maybe you should change your handle to 'pattonenthusiast1076'? Oh! There's more shit in me cerea-o.

Awright, now I'm just bustin' your balls.
