The Untold Story of the Salem Fairy Witch Trials

The Salem witch trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. The trials resulted in the executions of twenty people, fourteen of them women, and five of them men. One man, Giles Corey, was pressed to death for refusing to plead, and at least five people died in jail. It was the deadliest witch hunt in the history of colonial North America. The trials were pretrial examinations conducted in a variety of court-related settings, including: the meeting house in the Village of Salem, courthouse in Salem Town, and various private homes. The trials were conducted by the Court of Oyer and Terminer, a panel of judges including Thomas Newton, William Stoughton, Bartholomew Gedney, Nathaniel Saltonstall, Waitstill Winthrop, John Richards, Samuel Sewall, Stephen Sewall and Isaac Addington.

The four sessions of the Superior Court of Judicature in 1693, held in Salem Town, but also in Ipswich, Boston, and Charlestown, produced only three guilty verdicts in the more than fifty witchcraft trials they conducted.
