The Dark and Twisted Tales Behind Cursed Weapons in Dark Souls

By admin

Cursed weapons in Dark Souls are a unique and dangerous type of weapon that can bring about a host of negative effects for the player character. These cursed weapons have the ability to lower the player's maximum health, making them more vulnerable to enemy attacks. **The cursed status effect is a significant drawback as it can make battles much more challenging and increase the risk of death.** However, cursed weapons also have their benefits, with some dealing additional damage against specific enemy types or possessing special properties that make them valuable in certain situations. **Ultimately, the decision to use a cursed weapon comes down to weighing the potential risks and rewards, as players must consider whether the decreased health is worth the potential advantages.** It is important for players to be cautious when using cursed weapons and to strategize accordingly, as the lowered health can impact the overall difficulty of the game.

Would be fun if you could curse enemies, or if they turned to stone after you killed them even if it didnt give curse effect.

it wouldn t be the first time that fromsoft shows fake scaling like for the thorolund talisman having c scaling in faith but a flat magadjust of 165. Greatsword of Artorias (Cursed) | Dark Souls Wiki

Greatsword of Artorias (Cursed) is a Weapon in Dark Souls and Dark Souls Remastered.

Sword born from the souls of the great grey wolf Sif, guardian of the grave of the Abysswalker Knight Artorias."
"The sword can damage ghosts, as it was cursed when Artorias joined a covenant with the creatures of the Abyss."

How to Get / Where to Find Greatsword of Artorias (Cursed)

  • Ascension with the Soul of (Great Wolf) Sif and any of the following normal +10 weapons: Dagger, Parrying Dagger, Bandit's Knife, Shortsword, Longsword, Broadsword, Balder Side Sword, Sunlight Straight Sword, Barbed Straight Sword, Darksword, Bastard Sword, Claymore, Man-serpent Greatsword, Flamberge, Zweihander, Greatsword, Demon Great Machete.
  • In order to create the "Non-Cursed" version of this sword (the variant that has Divine and Abyss modifiers), you can ascend the soul using either the Broken Straight Sword +10 or Straight Sword Hilt +10. See Greatsword of Artorias.

Hints and Tips:

  • Can be given to Kingseeker Frampt to receive 50 Souls.
  • Greatsword of Artorias (Cursed) can be upgraded by using Demon Titanite.
  • When ascending the weapon, it will only be displayed as "Greatsword of Artorias", it will not say "Cursed". To be certain of which sword you're creating, look at the stats, which are unique. This sword deals purely Physical damage, while the Non-Cursed version has Phy/Mag split damage.
  • Once you make the Cursed sword variant and view its description, you will see that it is "Cursed".
  • This is one of the Cursed weapons that can inflict damage against Ghosts without the need to consume Transient Curse.
  • Like the Abyss Greatsword, this sword requires only Strength and Dexterity for the Physical damage scaling. It is still usable even without meeting the Intelligence and Faith requirement, except it bounces back for every hit.

Lore

  • Artorias and Sif are progenitors to The Abyss Watchers of DS3.

fun fact about these weapons for PvP: when used without the faith or int stat requirements the weapon still deals full damage but bounces every time you hit someone. this can be abused with a tech. i call it standstill i dont know the real name but basically if you are put into an animation like the bounce from this weapon hitting a wall getting kicked entering hitstun or waking up from a backstab you simply dont touch any inputs and your immune to backtab attempts for about 2-3 seconds. if someone attempts one the backstab will not be inputted allowing you to punish someone if they go for it. however a good player that stance cancels or kick confirms will just get a stance change or a kick respectively. this weapon isnt actually that good while doing this but its very fun and if the opponent does know about it its pretty effective.

This sword is very effective on high level builds, the pure physical AR you can reach with it is very hard to top

I just use it to whack ghosts. The vertical swing is effective at bonking the floor. I feel like Eustus getting his mallet.

"The sword can damage ghosts, as it was cursed when Artorias joined a covenant with the creatures of the Abyss." That right there is really interesting. It would have to refer to the creatures of the original Abyss, before Manus with the Dark Soul was corrupted. Alvina and Sif, and most likely Artorias too, seem to have shared a bond together. We see Alvina traversing the Abyss in AoTA, so could she be an abyssal creature? Wait, what if Sif was also an abyssal creature, and Artorias got him as a pet friend when he made a covenant with the abyssal creatures? In the Covenant of Artorias item description, they are also referred to as "beasts of the Abyss". Big beastly cats, big beastly wolves, probably other different animal creatures too?

i wanted to know what the max damage of the weapon was at softcaps, and oddly enough, both soulsplanner and mugenmonkey showed that this weapon doesnt scale with faith or int, only physical stats. could someone check ingame if that is correct ? it wouldn't be the first time that fromsoft shows fake scaling (like for the thorolund talisman having c scaling in faith but a flat magadjust of 165).

With all these stat scalings, it makes me feel like this sword would be absurdly powerful if used during/after a NG+ or two. I know the R2s are slow, but all other attacks are the same as the BKS, and it feels like it has a slightly longer swing range.
I know I’m looking forward to finding out just how hard this can wreck in PvE. Probably will use the non-cursed version for my later divine weapon, too. Has anyone tried this out themselves at like 40+ str, dex, int and faith yet and care to share their experience?

Note of warning, through the Giant Blacksmith's Upgrade menu. It does not say whether it curse or not, go by the damage and stats displayed on here if you're confuse. (FYI this is from the Xbox 360 version, do not know if that changed for the other versions).

Remember guys if you wanna make it a CURSED sword to kill ghosts you need a normal straight sword +10 before you do the ascension. If you do it at +9 or lower it won’t work! You’ll only be making a regular.

I’m gonna make this sword only because of New Londo. Hate that place. I don’t like relying on a item you can’t properly farm to get through a place that will almost definetly kill you if you don’t.

For anyone else who is an idiot like me :) The best way to know for sure which one you're making, is to only have a dagger/straightsword etc +10 in your inventory. Because the two types of greatswords: Cursed/Non-Cursed can only be made with entirely different types. The normal sword can only be made with the 'broken' sword types, while the cursed can only be made with the non-broken types. It's pretty typical of FromSoftware to not put much thought into the UX of these kinds of things, but that's the best way to make it out.

BTW it is requires 18 in faith and intelligence to use properly. So even if you have a dex or strength build you will need those stats. Just an fyi. Personally i recommend getting the stats to wield it as early as possible as it makes new londo a breeze.

But it's only slightly better than a jagged ghost blade, slower, without bleed (do ghosts bleed?) and costs more than 2x souls and rare titanite to upgrade. so why??

I'm still wondering why they put 18 points of stat requirements and a C scaling on both INT and FTH whilst it doesn't do magical damage at all. How funny.

I had a weird bug while wielding this sword in New Londo. basically, for some reason I cannot understand, ghosts were far more aggressive than usual and their aggro range looked wider. Somehow I made it to the room where you clim the ladder to reach Ingward, but before I could even get close to the room entrance I got aggroed by any single phantom around there and stunlocked to death. Granted, I had the starting warrior chest armor, with Elite Knight leggins, gloves and helm, but I had the wolf ring as well. Maybe it was too low poise, I thought, so I went back there with a full Havel set + Wolf Ring (Poise 161) and I still got aggroed the same way as before and stunlocked to death before I could even get into the room. Strange thing is that when I tried again, this time with a Zweihander equipped instead of Artorias Greatsword, ghosts were far less aggressive, had shorter aggro range (but this could be a placebo effect, as far as I know) and, wirdest thing, I was able to not be staggered by ghost, even rolling back to my previous armor set (Starting Warrior chest + Elite Knight helm, leggins and gloves). Anyone else experienced this?

Reviews for "The Cursed Weapons That Are Worth the Risk in Dark Souls"

1. John Smith - 1/5 stars - Cursed weapons in Dark Souls are such a frustrating and unnecessary feature. They add an extra layer of annoyance to an already challenging game. Not only do they drain your health while equipped, but they also require a specific item or a trip to a blacksmith to remove the curse. It's just too much of a hassle for a minor boost in damage. I would much rather spend my time exploring the game world and fighting enemies, rather than dealing with cursed weapons.
2. Sarah Johnson - 2/5 stars - I found cursed weapons in Dark Souls to be more of a hindrance than a benefit. Sure, they may offer higher damage, but the health drain associated with them makes it difficult to progress. It forces you to constantly keep a close eye on your health and spend precious resources on curse removal. It takes away from the overall enjoyment of the game and detracts from the sense of accomplishment when defeating enemies. I would have preferred if cursed weapons were either removed or had a more manageable downside.
3. Michael Thompson - 2/5 stars - Cursed weapons in Dark Souls simply feel unfair. They punish players for trying to use more powerful gear, which goes against the natural progression in the game. It feels like a cheap way to artificially increase difficulty and frustrate players. The health drain mechanic is particularly frustrating, as it limits your ability to explore and take risks. Overall, cursed weapons take away from the enjoyment of the game and make me question why I even bother trying to improve my character's gear.
