Brujas: The Magic and Power of Witches of Color (Paperback)

Witchcraft has made a comeback in popular culture, especially among feminists, and there is a new kind of witch emerging in our cultural consciousness: the bruja . Brujas chronicles the magical lives of these practitioners as they extend their personal rituals to larger self-care and activist movements and use their services to empower young people of color. The bruja represents the new “witch” of the United States, a practitioner who melds ancient tradition with new technologies and mirrors the diversity and activist spirit of today’s youth. Brujas reminds us that witchcraft is more than a trend—it’s a movement.

Brujas follows this movement from its historical practices to its current manifestations. Through profiles of bruja practitioners who make their living offering magical products and services, author Monteagut examines the conflicts that have arisen as spiritual traditions are appropriated and commodified. Brujas also delves into the historical practices from which brujas borrow to provide readers with information and resources to begin their own spiritual practices and businesses. Above all, the bruja movement is about empowering people to find the healing magic in their own lives and to imagine a happier and healthier world.

Reviews for "Bruja Magic and Divination: Unlocking the Mysteries of Tarot, Runes, and Crystals"

1. Karen - 2 stars - As someone who loves fantasy novels, I was really disappointed with "Bruija the Magic and Power." The characters lacked depth, and I found it difficult to connect with any of them. The plot felt disjointed and confusing, with too many subplots that were never fully developed. Additionally, the writing style seemed awkward and choppy, making it hard to fully immerse myself in the story. Overall, I was left unsatisfied and wouldn't recommend this book to avid fantasy readers.
2. John - 1 star - "Bruija the Magic and Power" was a complete disappointment. The pacing was incredibly slow, and the story felt like it dragged on forever. The world-building was lacking, leaving me with no sense of the fantastical realm in which the story was set. The dialogue was stilted and unnatural, making it difficult to believe in the characters' interactions. I struggled to finish this book and was ultimately left feeling underwhelmed. I would advise others to steer clear of this novel if they are seeking an engaging fantasy read.
3. Jessica - 2 stars - I had high hopes for "Bruija the Magic and Power," but it fell short of my expectations. The main protagonist was portrayed as exceptionally powerful, which made the conflicts and obstacles she faced feel trivial. The lack of character development and the overemphasis on magical abilities took away from the potential depth of the story. Furthermore, the writing style felt juvenile and lacked sophistication. It's unfortunate, but I cannot recommend this book to fans of fantasy literature looking for a captivating read.
4. Robert - 3 stars - While "Bruija the Magic and Power" had its moments, it left me feeling dissatisfied overall. The premise had promise, but the execution fell flat. The pacing was inconsistent, with long stretches of monotony followed by quick, rushed action scenes. The world-building felt incomplete, leaving me with many unanswered questions. Additionally, the dialogue did not flow smoothly, making it challenging to engage with the characters. While not terrible, this book did not live up to its potential, and I would caution readers to approach it with tempered expectations.
