Anne Hathaway's Fascinating Take on the Grand High Witch's Motives in "The Witches

By admin

Anne Hathaway is set to star in the upcoming film adaptation of Roald Dahl's "The Witches," playing the character of the Grand High Witch. This iconic role was previously played by Angelica Houston in the 1990 film version. The Grand High Witch is a sinister and powerful character who leads a group of witches in their evil plans. Anne Hathaway's casting has generated a lot of excitement among fans of the book and the original film. She is known for her versatile acting skills and has previously portrayed a variety of characters, making her a perfect fit for the challenging role. With her talent and dedication, Anne Hathaway is sure to bring a new level of intensity and darkness to the character of the Grand High Witch.

In The Witches, witches hide in plain sight by disguising themselves as ordinary women — but the tells that give them away are also coded as anti-Semitic: they’re bald beneath their wigs, have reptile-like hands and feet, and have noses that expand when they sniff out children. The grand high witch also speaks with a German accent, one that can easily pass for Yiddish.

This is, to be blunt, the theme of most anti-Semitic conspiracies throughout history, and has led in its most extreme form to the idea that Jewish people hide in plain sight while essentially controlling the world. Not long after this revelation, the Boy comes face to face with not only one witch, but an entire huge coven of witches who ve all assembled where else.

Hathaway soars in Robert Zemeckis’ otherwise so-so adaptation with a little levitation, a thick Germanic(-ish?) accent, and a metal bustier.

Reviews for "The Grand High Witch's Lair: Anne Hathaway on the Set of "The Witches"

1. Sarah - 2 stars
I was really excited to see Anne Hathaway as the Grand High Witch, but I was disappointed with her performance. I felt like she was trying too hard to be menacing and it came off as over-the-top and caricature-like. The original Grand High Witch played by Anjelica Huston was much more subtle and sinister. Hathaway's portrayal felt forced and it took away from the overall experience of the movie.
2. John - 1 star
Anne Hathaway's portrayal of the Grand High Witch in this movie was absolutely horrendous. I couldn't understand half of what she was saying with her accent, and her attempt at being scary was laughable. It felt like she was trying to imitate a Disney villain rather than embodying the true essence of the character. I was extremely disappointed and would not recommend this movie to anyone who is a fan of the original book or the previous film adaptation.
3. Emily - 2 stars
I was really looking forward to seeing Anne Hathaway as the Grand High Witch, but unfortunately, her performance fell flat for me. Her exaggerated facial expressions and over-the-top gestures were distracting and took away from the story. I feel like she tried too hard to make the character her own, instead of staying true to the original source material. Overall, the movie was a letdown, mainly due to Hathaway's portrayal of the iconic character.
4. Mark - 1 star
Anne Hathaway's portrayal of the Grand High Witch was a complete misstep in this movie. Her exaggerated accent was distracting and made it difficult to understand her dialogue. The character lacked the true menace and presence that the Grand High Witch should have. Hathaway's performance felt more like a caricature rather than a fully-formed character. It was a disappointing choice and it ultimately took away from my enjoyment of the film.
5. Melissa - 3 stars
I have mixed feelings about Anne Hathaway's portrayal of the Grand High Witch. While I appreciate her attempt to bring a new interpretation to the character, I felt that her performance was a bit too over-the-top and lacked the subtlety that made the original character so terrifying. There were moments where she showed glimmers of the true essence of the Grand High Witch, but overall, it fell short for me. I think Hathaway has the talent, but this particular role didn't showcase it as well as I had hoped.
