The Mystical Properties of 24 Karat Magic in the Air

By admin

"24 karat magic in the air" There is a certain allure, a certain feeling, a certain magic that comes with the phrase "24 karat magic in the air". It evokes a sense of luxury, of grandeur, of something extraordinary happening, something that captivates our senses and makes us feel alive. The phrase itself is powerful. It conjures up images of gold, a precious metal associated with wealth and abundance. It suggests that something exceptional, something of the highest quality, is happening or about to happen. But what exactly is this "24 karat magic"? Is it literal magic, like something out of a fairytale? Or is it a metaphorical magic, representing a unique and special experience? Perhaps, it is both.

Bruno Mars: 24K Magic single, music video released

Bruno Mars’ new song has arrived, as well as its music video and the title, artwork, and release date for his next album.

Late Thursday, the pop star debuted “24K Magic,” his first solo single since “Young Girls” in 2013, and the first track from his new album, due Nov. 18, also titled 24K Magic.

The new song starts off slow, reminiscent of ’80s R&B, with an autotuned voice singing, “Tonight, I just wanna take you higher,” before kicking into a familiar gear, turning into an energetic dance track. “Put yo’ pinky rings up to the moon Girls/ what y’all trying to do 24 karat magic in the air/ Head to toe soul player,” Mars continues before diving into the first verse. “Pop pop it’s showtime / showtime / Guess who’s back again,” he reminds fans (and presumably those girls from earlier).

Mars also released the cover art for the album on Instagram, which sees him seated in a (presumably 24k) gold chair, with the album’s title next to him. 24K Magic is set to be released on Nov. 18.

Though he had hits before, Mars’ 2012 album Unorthodox Jukebox propelled him to stardom. The No. 1 album was propelled by lead single “Locked Out of Heaven,” which held the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks. Mars parlayed that into playing at two Super Bowls and lending his vocals to Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk,” the biggest song of 2015.

“24K Magic” is available to stream on Spotify and Apple Music, and for purchase on iTunes. Hear it below.

Bruno Mars' "24K Magic" Is Pretty Extravagant

If you're feeling like the universe has been just a little bit musically deprived in the past half decade, I have some delightful news. Thursday night, Bruno Mars released his first single in four years, and the "24K Magic" sounds like is could be a solid gold hit. But after playing the video for "24K Magic" ad nauseum, you may be wondering exactly what the "24K Magic" lyrics mean. Luckily, you just have to skim the surface of the verses, and the answers are all shining and laid out for you.

Mars pre-games for the festivities that are about to explode in the video with the following lines:

TonightI just want to take you higherThrow your hands up in the skyLet's set this party off right

The party in question is the Bruno Mars party. The "you" in question could have romantic connotations, of course, and the rest of the song seems to assert a certain amount of inclusiveness to this celebration:

Players, put yo' pinky rings up to the moonGirls, what y'all trying to do?24 karat magic in the air

So we're clear, both players and girls are invited to this party. Can players also be girls? Maybe that's something he'll tackle in his next single. Either way the implication is that we, the audience, fall into at least one of the two categories. But, in reference to the titular "24 karat magic," 24K is the highest grade of gold. Therefore, the magic in the air is of the highest caliber; it is quality, luxurious magic. Also, if you're getting literal and don't have garbage pinky rings, 24 karats of gold could quick possibly be in the air when you throw your hands up. Clever.

Once Mars delves into the heart of the song with the first verse, he's quick to announce his arrival with:

Pop pop, it's show time (Show time)Show time (Show time)Guess who's back again?Oh they don't know? (Go on tell 'em)

There's no profound subtext here, Mars is straight up Slim Shady-ing it. That is, he's announcing his arrival back into the Top 40 Charts after his four year hiatus. It is, as I'm sure an inevitable tour will quickly prove, literally showtime. But as seen through the almost parody-like video, and the implied 24K magic that Mars can afford, you can tell Mars is back because of how he's decked out in wealth and success:

I bet they know soon as we walk in (Showin' up)Wearing Cuban links (ya)Designer minks (ya)Inglewood's finest shoes (Whoop, whoop)

Yes, he takes great pains through this verse to assert that he is rich and fabulous. And the aesthetics surrounding him definitely reaffirm the decadence. He arrives to Vegas in a private jet, he cruises downtown in a luxury car, he has the entire squad decked out in designer jackets, there are hoards of gorgeous women in lamé bikinis, and he's holding a golden bottle of champagne. It looks like the 24K party he promised. Lord knows I can't afford it.

And that's literally all you need to know about "24K Magic" before you get swept up in the Bruno Mars party. In laymen's terms, this is an entire song that announces Mars' return and reminds us that he's a baller. Is it effective? If you haven't already, feel free to watch the video and figure out for yourself.

Bruno Mars - '24K Magic'

Four years is a long time to take a break. For Bruno Mars, though, it was just what he needed. His first single in four years '24K Magic' sees a fresh new start for the pop's funkiest singer.

Massive success brings massive wealth, and that shows in the song. It's half self-obsessed and half excited: the song's literally about his 24-karat gold chain and having an extravagant party, but on the other hand it also says that the party is here and he's excited to be back in the game. The chorus proudly chants "Players only, come on / Put your pinky rings up to the moon / Girls, what y'all trying to do? / 24 karat magic in the air / Head to toe soul player / Uh, look out," showing the celebration and grandiose of this party we're welcomed to.

The upfront nature and hype-up vibes of the lyrics is backed by the very 90s instrumental. The whole song's a party! Packed with fat basslines and bright synths, the instrumental makes the song feel bigger than the lyrics do. Slowly building bass synths give the song a taste of modernism while still fleshing out the 90s feel. It's a departure from Unorthodox Jukebox in the sense that its emphasis is geared on the vibe rather than the meaning. Mars was always a truly funky man, and '24K Magic' takes it even further.

The music video gives the song an appropriate visualization. The song's music video features Mars and his crew partying throughout Las Vegas, hitting up casinos and grand parties. The video's pretty straightforward, grandiose imagery of the Vegas party scene paired with dancing and butts capture the song's vibe perfectly.

Bruno Mars is back. It's real and its strong, and it's ready to tear up the music scene. 2017 is going to be a big year for Mars if '24K Magic' is any signal. It's the title track of his upcoming album 24K Magic, out on November 18. Don't miss it! We'll have our review out on it when it comes. Until then, we'll be partying to this track.
