In the not-too-distant past (1994), the witches of a local group called the Ravynswood Grove formed a “magical circle” in a clearing at the state park to celebrate the summer solstice. In a 1994 article in The Courant, members of the group said witches have been assembling in the forest for centuries. Witches gathered in the forest because they felt closer to the gods of nature that they worship, said Thom Nadeau, high priest of the Ravynswood Grove.
“In the burning times, you would meet in the woods,” he said. “The woods provided a safe place.”
The 355.6-acre state park is off Route 80 and contains Schreeder Pond, which was built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The heavily wooded hollow contains natural caves and rocky ledges, which once provided homes for Native Americans and, maybe, a few mischievous witches who went by the name of Goody and Betty.
