The Art of Witch Window Applique: A Step-by-Step Guide

By admin

A witch window applique, also known as a Vermont window, is a unique type of window design commonly found in the state of Vermont, United States. The term "witch window" is believed to have originated from a folk belief that witches cannot fly their broomsticks through slanted windows. Witch window appliques are characterized by their diagonal placement in the side of a house, usually in an upper floor or attic. Unlike traditional windows that are installed horizontally or vertically, witch windows are oriented at a 45-degree angle. These windows can be seen on various types of houses, including old farmhouses, cottages, and historic buildings. There are several theories as to why witch windows became popular in Vermont.

You may not use the designs in the pattern to create and sell an embroidery pattern, or acrylic templates of all the pieces in the pattern.

As the duo begins working on their rustic little fixer-upper, talking all the while about Simon s mom, with the inquisitive little tween asking a million questions about the marriage that didn t make it, it slowly becomes apparent that they re not alone in the house. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item.

There are several theories as to why witch windows became popular in Vermont. One theory suggests that the angled placement allowed for easier installation and maximized natural light into the attic space. Another theory suggests that the slanted design made it easier to maneuver large furniture through the window during the construction or renovation process.

The embroidery pattern is in two sizes - 4 and 8 inches tall.

Difficulty

I designed this pattern to teach appliqué – so it’s great for beginners, and a fun and relaxing project for more experienced stitchers. If you can use your sewing machine, you have the skills you need to make this cute applique witch.

I used appliqué with fusible adhesive and Quilt As You Go to make a super easy quilt - all done on the machine. The pattern also includes links to videos teaching needle turn appliqué and machine appliqué with freezer paper, in case you prefer those methods.

Materials Needed

You can find links to sources for many of my favorite tools and supplies here.

For a single block you'll just need an 11" square of fabric and some scraps for the applique. You'll also need a sheet of fusible adhesive. I use Heat & Bond Lite for all my quilts.

If you're making a quilt in one of my standard sizes, here are recommended fabric amounts needed.

Crib Size (50" square)

  • 3 yards of a variety of background fabrics
  • assorted prints for the appliques (get at least 7 fat quarters, but you’ll probably want more for variety)
  • 2 1/2 yards fabric for the quilt back (or 1 1/2 yards Cuddle Fleece )
  • 1/2 yard binding fabric

Napping Size (50" x 60")

  • 3 1/3 yards of a variety of background fabrics
  • assorted prints for the appliques (get at least 8 fat quarters, but you’ll probably want more for variety)
  • 4 yards fabric for the quilt back (or 2 yards Cuddle Fleece )
  • 1/2 yard binding fabric

Twin Size (70" x 90")

  • 7 yards of a variety of background fabrics
  • assorted prints for the appliques (get at least 16 fat quarters, but you’ll probably want more for variety)
  • 5 yards fabric for the quilt back (or 4 yards Cuddle Fleece )
  • 5/8 yard binding fabric

You'll find materials lists for additional quilt sizes here .

Yes!

You may, however, sell anything you make with Shiny Happy World patterns as long as you are the one making it.

For example, if you're using this pattern to make pillows which you sell at a craft fair or in an online shop, that's great!

Talk to Me

If you're hiring out any part of the process, please get in touch and we'll work out a fair licensing agreement.

For example, if you want to hire someone to sew those pillows, or if you want to have the design printed on fabric that you sew into pillows, those two scenarios would require a licensing agreement. Get in touch! I'm easy to talk to. :-) [email protected]

Witch window applique

The size and shape of witch windows can vary, but they are typically small in comparison to regular windows. They are often elongated in a shape similar to a parallelogram, with one long side parallel to the roofline. Some witch windows have decorative features or latticework, adding to their distinctive appearance. While witch windows are mainly found in Vermont, there are examples of similar window designs in other parts of the world. In Switzerland, for instance, "lucidern" windows have a slanted design, and in some areas of New England, "diamond windows" share a similar aesthetic. Today, witch windows have become a charming architectural feature that adds character to buildings in Vermont. They are often valued for their historical significance and unique visual appeal. Visitors to the state often seek out houses with witch windows to admire and photograph these intriguing and unusual window designs..

Reviews for "Incorporating Witch Window Appliques into Modern Interior Design"

1. Rebecca - 2/5 stars - I ordered the witch window applique for Halloween and was very disappointed. The colors were not as vibrant as they appeared online and the adhesive was not very strong. The applique started peeling off within a few days. I also found it difficult to remove without leaving behind a sticky residue. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this product.
2. John - 1/5 stars - I was really excited to receive the witch window applique, but it was a complete letdown. The size was much smaller than I expected, and the design looked pixelated and cheap. The adhesive was also really weak, and the applique kept falling off. It didn't even last one day before I had to throw it away. Save your money and look for a better quality product elsewhere.
3. Sarah - 2/5 stars - I was hoping to spruce up my home for Halloween with the witch window applique, but it didn't live up to my expectations. The design was not as clear as I had hoped, and the colors were dull and faded. It was difficult to apply without getting air bubbles, and it started peeling off within a week. I ended up taking it down because it just looked tacky. I'll be looking for a better quality window decoration next time.
