This behavior likely stems from her past bad experiences with other people.
After they had toppled a large country, her fiancé proposed to her at the top of the castle, though she ignored him and left everything behind, despairing that what she had originally wanted no longer existed. A person meeting with Echidna could also commune with the souls of Carmilla and the other dead Witches, as they resided in the dreamscape with the Witch of Greed.

Carmilla is the Witch of Lust and has also been called the Faceless Goddess. Her physical appearance is that of a slightly skinny teenage girl with waist length light pink hair and yellow eyes. She constantly emits light (unexplained reason) which contradicts her status as the Witch of Lust. She wears a long white coat over a pink dress that goes to her ankles. She also wears a gigantic green scarf around her neck that trails along the ground. Carmilla is somewhat timid with little to no self confidence. Despite all of this she is still attractive to others as the Witch of Lust due to her Authority of Lust.
Echidna tempts people with their innermost desires, exploiting their weaknesses and manipulating them to fulfill her own agenda. Despite her manipulative nature, Echidna is a highly intelligent and knowledgeable individual. She is known as the "Witch of Greed" due to her insatiable thirst for knowledge and the accumulation of knowledge at any cost. Echidna's desire for knowledge and immortality led her to become a Witch and ultimately resulted in her downfall. In the series, she is depicted as a powerful and cunning character who plays a pivotal role in the intricate plot. Echidna's character in Re:Zero offers a unique portrayal of the Witch of Lust archetype. While lust is often associated with negative connotations, Echidna's character adds depth and complexity to the concept.
