Wicked Witch Socks: The Perfect Accessory for Witchy Vibes

By admin

Wicked witch socks are a style of socks that have gained popularity in recent years. These socks are typically dark in color, often black or dark purple, and feature various Halloween or witch-themed designs. They may have patterns of witches' hats, broomsticks, cauldrons, or other spooky motifs. One of the reasons why wicked witch socks have become trendy is that they allow people to show their love for Halloween and all things witchy in a subtle and fun way. They can be worn year-round but are especially popular during the Halloween season. These socks can add a touch of whimsy to any outfit, whether it be a casual jeans and tee ensemble or a more formal dress.

Wicked witch socks

These toe up house socks could easily belong to the Wicked Witch of the east.
If it wasn’t for a house, which famously landed on her in “The Wizard of Oz”, leaving only her legs with the black and white stockings and ruby slippers exposed.

There are two options for the toe section of the socks.
The first option is a “witchy” pointed and slightly curled shape
and the second option is a simple rounded shape, to keep with the slippers as seen in the movie.

The pattern comes in three sizes (S/M/L).
The length of each size can be further adjusted at indicated points in the pattern. The fit is a loose slipper fit, not a snug sock fit.
Size S should fit EU shoe size 35-37, size M 38-40 and size L 41-43.

Except for the shoes sizes all measurements are listed both in metric and in imperial/US units. For an overview of shoe sizes see:

Methods:
The pattern contains short rows for shaping, intarsia colorwork, cables and surface crochet slip stitch for a neat finish.
Basic instructions for each method are included.

Attention!
The colorwork method used in this pattern relies heavily
on the ability to change from one end of a double pointed needle to the other, therefore the pattern will not adapt easily to knitting on circular needles.

Tips and tricks:
Make sure to account for “growing” after the first wash by measuring gauge on a washed and dried sample.
You may also want to check the colored yarns for excess dye, to avoid the colors bleeding into the white wool when the socks are first washed. In my experience there is little to no color bleeding with the suggested yarns, but other yarns may differ.

Errata: The first Sentence of the Leg and cuff section needs to end in:
… and attach it (11/12/13)sts to the right of the spot where you cut the yarns.
This error is corrected in the current download version 2.0

Wicked Socks

It’s that time of the year…again! We have less than one month left in 2020, so naturally I’m trying to write up all the blog posts about things I made this year before we ring into the new year!

Right before Halloween, I made a pair of Wicked witch of the west inspired socks!

The green is dyed by Gingersnap exclusively for River City Yarn’s Flash Mob Pages Collection. This green colourway was released in May 2020, and is inspired by the novel, The Wizard of Oz. There are still some left, if you want to grab one for yourself!

Needle size: 2.25 mm

I get that the bright green and yellow colour combo isn’t for everyone. But it’s really fun colour as socks, don’t you think?

I wasn’t sure how much I would like them before I started this project, but I actually enjoy wearing them a lot.

It’s such a perfect witchy stripe!

Since this is a stripe pattern created by two different yarns (as opposed to a self-striping yarn), I wanted to make sure to avoid a jog.

What is a jog, you might ask?

When you knit a stripe pattern in the round, there’s going to be a visible step where you switch between colours—the stripe doesn’t match seamlessly.

If you googled “how to knit jogless stripes in the round”, you would find a ton of information on how to do it.

There’re a several ways to achieve the jogless stripes but my favourite method is explained so well on this blog post by Atelier Knits. It’s in Japanese but they have clear images, so you might be able to figure it out by just looking at them. This method works like a charm even with one or two stripes rows.

So I used this method this time too, but I think I could have done it better. Sure, the stripes all match and there’s no visible steps (except for one or two where I forgot to do it), but it might have been too loose, when the yarn was carried over. You can see that the black yarn is peaking from behind.

But it’s not a huge deal—when worn, it’s really not that noticeable.

Witches command respect. Soaring through the air among birds and planes, crowing out with that nasty cackle, scouring the ground below for little pretties to pluck off their feet, witches can sometimes still somehow fly under the radar.

Surprising, we know. But our astute Halloween intelligence operatives recount times in which witches weren't noticed until they hit solid ground below, and on Halloween, they seem like just another trick-or-treater—eliciting mere laughs from onlookers when they command them to hop on their broom or suffer death by boiling cauldron! All that considered, you'll definitely want a pair of terrifying leg candy to complete your witch ensemble. Hey being bad means looking devilish from head to toe, and they'll certainly notice these dastardly black-and-white stripes well before you plant your broom in the cold dirt.

1. Emma - 2 stars - I was really disappointed with "Wicked witch socks". The plot was confusing and it seemed like the author was trying too hard to be quirky and different.
