Wiccaa is a term that is often misunderstood and shrouded in mystery. It refers to a modern pagan religious movement that emerged in the middle of the 20th century. Wiccaa is often considered a form of witchcraft, but it is important to note that not all witches are Wiccan, and not all Wiccans are witches. The origins of Wiccaa can be traced back to Gerald Gardner, an English civil servant and amateur anthropologist who claimed to have been initiated into a secret coven of witches in the 1930s. Gardner's writings and teachings formed the foundation of modern Wiccaa, which drew inspiration from various occult and esoteric traditions. On the Banks of the Ouvèze River III Print
I’d like to invite you to take a walk with me along the banks of the Ouvèze river in spring. The trees are bursting forth with new life in wonderful vibrant greens. On previous days, it has rained and the river is now swollen and full, but on this beautiful evening, limpid and oh so quiet. The setting sun’s light is filtering through the foliage in dapples and sunbursts. The trees stand in blue violet shadows. And, in the dark recesses of the river’s bend, golden beams of sunlight stand out against the darkness. The reflection of undergrowth and trees in the water mingle with the filtered light. The undulating water creates wonderful fractured abstract shapes and then, when the water stills, it reforms a world mirrored. These parts of the river are magical, overgrown and sheltered. The greens, deep and rich. They seem to take us into a void. This sight drew me to make the painting. This Acrylic on canvas is ready to hang. Framing is not required. All my paintings are varnished to add a protective coat against dust. Only the highest quality archival fine art grade acrylic paint is used on the surface gessoed and prepared by myself. Often the fleeting effect of a particular light and colour in nature are held somewhere in my visual memory. At some point, this takes centre stage on the painting I am working on. It may appear during the process of creation without an obvious connection to the subject matter at hand and yet, it adds another dimension, a particular atmosphere. These processes are ways and means by which I express my connection to nature in all its richness and variety. I moved from Ireland to France to create a new body of work with the regular discipline of painting small oil studies on panel. These inform larger landscapes, still lifes and abstract works.
