The character with late european medieval/early renaissance religion, tall black hats, cloaks and weapons like the crossbow, sword or pistol, and of course a fanatical devotion to hunting down witches and supernatural creatures. what are the earliest fictional representations of these or the seminal works that gave rise to movie characters like Van Helsing, the Warhammer Fantasy archetype, and the Hammer film Witchfinder General? It seems like they sprang into life in the 20th century, almost out of nowhere. Can anyone recommend some early books, stories or other media to get stuck in with this genre/character?

Do you not want to include vampire hunters that match the same archetype? After all the original Van Helsing fit it pretty well.

BTW, since you referred to Van Helsing as one of the "movie characters" and didn't respond to my question about whether you would include the original version, I'm not sure if you actually know that the character predates the movie--he was in Bram Stoker's original Dracula from 1897, and unlike most (all?) real or fictional witch hunters before them, his role wasn't limited to investigation/interrogation/prosecution, he was mainly an investigator but also carried specialized equipment to kill vampires or protect against them (stakes, holy water etc.), and he did kill some sleeping vampires.

Wikipedia also has a vampire hunters page which indicates that Van Helsing was based on real "Professional or semi-professional vampire-hunters" who did sometimes carry kits with equipment like stakes, I suspect probably only for "killing" corpses thought to be vampires rather than because they planned to get into fights with awakened vampires. The "references" section at the end of the article mentions the book Slayers and their Vampires by Bruce McClelland which might be a good source for further info.
