The Haunting of Wallace and Gromit: Understanding the Curse

By admin

The Wallace and Gromit Curse is a term used to describe a phenomenon that has been observed in the careers of the people involved in the production of the popular British animated series, Wallace and Gromit. The curse refers to a series of unfortunate events or setbacks that seem to follow those who have worked on the show, leading to speculation that there may be a curse associated with the franchise. The curse first garnered attention after a number of tragedies befell the cast and crew of the Wallace and Gromit films. In 2003, during the production of "The Curse of the Were-Rabbit," the voice actor for Wallace, Peter Sallis, suffered a stroke. This not only affected the filming but also had a profound impact on Sallis' health and well-being. Additionally, the film's director, Nick Park, faced several challenges during this period, including technical difficulties and production setbacks.

The friends utilize the motorcycle for their window-washing business, but when the town finds itself in the midst of a wool shortage, Wallace and Gromit find themselves in the thick of it all. Whether it s flying to the moon, catching a hungry were-rabbit, or just delivering baked goods around town, Wallace and Gromit need the right contraption for the job.

Additionally, the film's director, Nick Park, faced several challenges during this period, including technical difficulties and production setbacks. In 2010, a fire broke out at the Aardman Animations studio, which resulted in significant damage to the building and the loss of several sets and props used in the Wallace and Gromit films. This incident was not only a setback in terms of the financial cost and time required to rebuild, but it also had a demoralizing effect on those involved in the production.

Just to be sure, all hack must be disabled. And depth/accurate date and accurate blend must be set. Native resolution and filtering on the bilinear PS2 mode. No anisotropic. No FXAA or any extra shader effects (easy to forget one ).

Ok, so the setting making screen dark was Skipdraw set to '1' in HW Hacks. I've set it because in Direct3D mode setting it to 1 fixes red (or green) vertical stripes (though it makes the screen darker)

So in the end the settings should be

Renderer: OpenGL (Hardware)
Hardware Depth 'ON' - fixes red stripes
HW Hacks, Skipdraw = 0
HW Hacks, Halfpixels offset 'ON' - fixes misplaced
Interlacing: Blend bff - fixes shaking

Accurate date - makes no diffrence
Blending accuraty - also makes no diffrence
Didn't use FXAA or shader effects.

Hi,
The game still works fine but I've noticed the sky in the tutorial stage is looking strange - there are dome-shaped horizontal stripes, see the picture. I've tried different PCSX versions 1.2.1, 1.4.0, 1.7.2330, different render modes, tried switching hacks and other settings on and off and it still shows.

In the youtube video "Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit in "True 60FPS" | PCSX2 1.7.2330 Vulkan | 4K( 6xIR )", at 5:02 mark - those stripes are noticeably softer

I don't remember this effect when I completed the game some years ago. Might it be my graphics card with a newer driver? gt730m

That did it, thanks! The stripes are there but much more subtle
Also newest build fixes the flicker on reflective parts (car bumper) that was present 1.7.2230.
Also with 1.7.3209 Qt the videos are rendered full, no black rectangle over bottom part. It is still present with 1.7.3209 wxWidgets

It's this very dynamic that helps elevate Curse of the Were-Rabbit above several movie-based, kiddie games. Each section of a particular stage (much of the game takes place in a quaint town) features a variety of multiplayer puzzles to solve. While many aren't that inspiring or inventive, they do help make the game a little more interesting. For example, many of the doors and traps in the game require one character to activate a switch while the other retrieves an item. Or there would be a ladder controlled by a crank and the only way to climb the ladder and reach an item was to have the secondary character control the crank.

Furthermore, the curse seemed to extend beyond the production itself. In 2018, it was reported that several individuals associated with the franchise, including animators and voice actors, had experienced personal tragedies and health issues. Although these incidents can be seen as unrelated to the curse, they fueled speculation and perpetuated the legend of the Wallace and Gromit Curse. While the curse may be viewed as nothing more than a series of unfortunate coincidences, it has nevertheless captured the imaginations of fans and those in the entertainment industry. Some have attributed the curse to the inherent challenges of stop-motion animation, which can be a labor-intensive and technically demanding process. Others believe that the curse is simply a result of the franchise's enduring popularity, leading to increased scrutiny and an amplified perception of any setbacks or misfortunes that occur. Regardless of its origins or validity, the Wallace and Gromit Curse serves as a testament to the challenges and risks faced by those working in the entertainment industry. It reminds us that even the most beloved and successful franchises are not immune to adversity, and that success often comes with a price..
