Positive or neutral applications of Shadow magic.
In the magic system I'm building, there are several types of magic, including Light and Shadow, and both are neutral. Shadow/Dark =/= evil and Light =/= good.
In this world, Shadow is more than simply the absence of Light. The longer and more deeply one studies and practices Shadow magic, the more connected they become to the dark energy of this universe. They can use this dark energy to do basic tasks like conjure darkness, or they can manipulate the darkness as a physical force which can interact with objects and living beings. They can also use it to cause decay. As death and decay are natural parts of the cycle of life, this power is inherently neutral, though many don't see it that way.
I am trying to think of positive or neutral applications for this type of magic to really drive home the neutrality of it and subvert the "dark is bad" idea. Below is what I've been able to come up with so far, and I would love to hear anyone else's ideas. I'm also open to suggestions for negative applications of Light!
• Create darkness in a setting for comfort or whenever darkness is necessary (one studying Light could also do this)
• Quicken the death of a suffering person or animal, or mercifully kill someone quickly and painlessly
• Quicken the death and decay of plants or forest area to make room for new growth
• Create conditions for plants that require darkness to grow or thrive
• Create illusions to protect themselves or others
