The Worst Witch is a children's novel written by British author Jill Murphy. First published in 1974, it tells the story of Mildred Hubble, a clumsy and accident-prone young witch who attends Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches. Throughout the book, Mildred finds herself constantly getting into trouble and making mistakes, earning her the title of "The Worst Witch" among her classmates and teachers. In a statement announcing her death on Friday, her son Charlie said I feel beyond lucky to have had a mum like mine, and it s impossible to summarise the ways her absence will be felt.

Murphy came up with the idea for the first Worst Witch novel, which followed the exploits of Mildred Hubble at witch school, at the age of 14 and based it on her own experiences at a strict convent school.
