The Magic Flute Review: A Unique Fantasy Epic

The Magic Flute is a fun and unique twist on the opera by Mozart of the same name that delivers epic fantasy and incredible music.

The Magic Flute is a film that gives viewers a new and fresh take on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s opera of the same name. It combines romance, fantasy, music, and drama to create something completely unique. If you enjoy the opera, you will love this movie, but even if you don’t, there is a whole lot here to keep you entertained.

The film follows Tim Walker (Jack Wolfe) who has wanted nothing more than to go to the prestigious Mozart All Boys Music School. Once his father passes, he is told by his mother to go, as she would not want to hold him back from his dream. He arrives just in time to be considered for his dream role, Prince Tamino.

When he finds a magic flute that transports him to the world of Mozart’s opera, The Magic Flute, he literally must become this character in order to complete three trials and make his wish come true.

An Epic Fantasy

The world that Tim is transported to is visually stunning. It is clear that those who worked on this film wanted it to deviate as much as possible from the real world. It truly is as if he is in another time, and the opera itself.

These moments are easily my favorites of The Magic Flute, as there is so much joy, as well as darkness, and so much to look at. When Tim is here, there is almost a playfulness to the world, versus the drama and struggles in his true life.

A lot of this could be due to his companion Papageno (Iwan Rheon) who brings wonder and amusement to his role. He is a complete joy to watch and is clearly having a blast with this character. “Prince Tamino” and Papageno are hilarious together, but also teach each other a lot. Watching their relationship grow is simply too much fun to not enjoy this world, and this part of the film.

Incredible Music

There is no denying that Jack Wolfe has an amazing singing voice after watching this movie. The boy can sing! When he first opened his mouth, my jaw dropped to the floor. He isn’t the only talented voice in The Magic Flute, but he is certainly the standout.

As to be expected, there is a lot of music in this movie. While it doesn’t always work, the majority of it does. It keeps things flowing at a good pace when it can, and always adds a bit of entertainment and fun to the plot.

Romance

Who doesn’t love a bit of romance in their movies? The best thing about the way it is worked into The Magic Flute is that it doesn’t overpower the rest of the story. There are a few budding relationships here — each one special in its own way.

For those who like a love story, they will be happy with how this movie plays out. While there is a little conflict, there is enough to keep you guessing if they will or won’t, which keeps the film intriguing and a bit suspenseful.

Do You Have To Know The Magic Flute Opera?

So do you know to know the story of the opera to enjoy The Magic Flute? Not at all. In fact, quite the opposite is true. Not knowing the story helps to keep things interesting. Certain parts of the movie are predictable, even for those who don’t know where it is going. So to go in as blind as possible helps to keep the film that much more entertaining.

Since I knew nothing of the opera before watching The Magic Flute, it is hard to imagine how those who know the story will react. That said, after watching I looked up the synopsis of the opera and it plays out very similarly, but with a bit of a twist that keeps things fresh.

What Doesn’t Work

If you are not a fan of opera, then some of the songs can be a bit much. Don’t worry, they switch things up and there are a few modern twists weaved in, however the music is very operatic, as to be expected. Still, the cast is extremely talented, each one with a set of pipes that will blow viewers away — even if they don’t love the style they are singing in.

The jumping back and forth between the modern world and the world of The Magic Flute makes sense story-wise, however there are often times where the jump interrupts what feel like key moments. This is very much on purpose, and designed to keep the audience on the edge of their seat a they must wait for the next trial, or for something to be resolved.

However, more often than not it pulls watchers out of the story, which is never a good thing. Especially when it takes a few beats to find yourself back in it. While I appreciate the thought behind it, I often found myself frustrated with the going back and forth between the real world and this other world. Perhaps if the real world was simply there at the beginning and end of the film it would have flowed better.

Overall Thoughts

The Magic Flute delivers a solid combination of several genres and while it can feel a little muddled at times, it is overall extremely fun and entertaining. The costumes and set design in the fantasy land alone make it a feast for the eyes, but the fact that the story is entertaining enough to keep you interested for the whole two hours will have viewers happy they decided to check it out.

This film teaches important lessons of pursuing your dreams, while also allowing the audience to have a bit of fun with the story. There are some truly heartwarming and touching moments, as well as some silly humor and incredible song performances.

The Magic Flute is a must see movie for opera fans and those who nothing of the world, also. It is an epic musical fantasy come to life on the screen, what more could you ask for?
