The bustling witch In a small quaint village nestled deep within the woods, lived a lively and bustling witch named Agatha. With her vibrant purple hair and a mischievous smile, Agatha was known far and wide for her unique magical skills and enchanting personality. Every morning, Agatha could be found in her cluttered cottage, surrounded by a plethora of spell books and cauldrons bubbling with strange potions. The aroma of herbs and incense would fill the air, creating an atmosphere of mysterious energy. Agatha's loyal black cat, Salem, would often be perched on a high shelf, observing her every move with curiosity. Agatha's days were always filled with various magical tasks and adventures.

SNEAKING out of a hotel is never easy, especially when you book with a disgruntled hotel manager who is determined to make you pay.

It was late October when we arrived in the bustling capital of Baja California Sur. We had reserved a room for six nights at Baja BnB. While attempting to check in, the owner surprised us by deciding to increase the daily rate and demanded we switch hotels for at least two nights.

Waiting patiently in our overpriced room was nerve racking as the manager lingered in the foyer anticipating payment. It was the moment she turned her back, to take a phone call, that we made our swift escape.

I later discovered the manager, who we coined “The Witch of Baja”, had frantically wrote to Booking.com demanding payment for at least three of our six-day booking – plus the cancellation fee. Fortunately, I had beaten her to the punch, I wrote to Booking.com and the website admin agreed the price hike and request to switch hotels had been “unreasonable” and waived all charges.

Stranded, without accommodation, we trawled the streets in search of a suitable place to spend the night, when we stumbled across Hotel Mediterrane. Situated near the malecon, our room was spacious, well serviced and included a rooftop terrace equipped with beer-chairs to enjoy the glorious sunsets.

La Paz is known as the “pearl of Mexico”. It was named for the rare black pearl in abundance throughout the Sea of Cortez, which also holds a bounty of the world’s rarest marine and birdlife. From the 15th to 18th century, Mexico was the only place to find such a pearl.

There are an incredible 900 islands and rocky outcrops scattered throughout the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California) and pirates, from the 16th to the 18th centuries, used the islands as hideouts to plunder Spanish cargo ships carrying gold, silk, pearls and other treasures.

Our travels took us to the islands of Espiritu Santo, Partida and Los Islotes, the region coined the “world’s aquarium” by Jacques Cousteau. The area is one of the most diverse seas on Earth, and is home to species representing one-third of world’s marine mammals. The islands provide nesting and stopover habitats for hundreds of species of migratory birds and are breeding grounds for seals and sea lions. Five species of marine turtles nest along the peninsula’s coastlines, and nine whale species—blue, fin, sei, Bryde’s, minke, humpback, and gray— pass through the waters.

You need a tour guide to explore the waters and we booked with Mar Y Aventuras. However, we were shifted, due to overbooking, to Espiritu & Baja Private Tours – a blessing in disguise. We ended up with one of Baja´s foremost tour guides, Rodrigo Rocha and Sea Captain Cesar.

Rodrigo is a marine biologist and passionate environmental conservationist who can speak several different languages including excellent English. Together, the duo, Rodrigo and Cesar, spend their days touring the islands with visitors. They also campaign for the preservation of the region as overfishing and insufficient freshwater flows threaten already fragile habitats.

There’s been plenty of efforts towards conserving the area including efforts to create a marine sanctuary, but the lure of easy prey and fast money make illegal fishing common.

Cesar and his family are one of few La Paz locals permitted, by the Mexican Government, to fish the waters using traditional methods after the region was declared a nature reserve in early 2000.

Rodrigo’s explanations and passion for conservation were inspiring as he educated us on the region’s precious natural wonders and helped make our experience more than just a tour.

We were fortunate to pass a Whale Shark, about the size of a compact car. The shark drifted slowly under our boat and occasionally breached the surface to thrash it’s enormous tail.

We floated through sea caves and islets once used by the English Privateers, Sir Francis Drake and Thomas Cavendish, whose famed hideouts and battle grounds are now filled with nesting colonies of local birdlife including endangered blue-footed boobies, which are only found nesting off La Paz and the Galapagos Islands. We spotted several other bird species including cormorants, gulls and great blue herons. Our tour took us passed a mysterious white island which Rodrigo said was known simply as: “bird shit island” – a fitting title.

Our first stop was Isla Los Islotes, where thousands of sea lions bask in the sun. Equipped with our snorkelling gear we prepared to take to the water – but not before Rodrigo set some ground rules: “Do not go near the bulls (large sea lions), do not stray from the group, do not panic and enjoy!”, simple enough.

The moment we hit the cool water, the sea-lion pups swam playfully towards us. They darted up and down as we bobbed in the water and it was a little daunting as deep below the shadow of a large bull passed underneath. We circled the island with sea lions and an array of colourful tropical fish in tow, before we boarded our boat and set off for the beach known as Playa Corralito.

Corralito is one of the world’s most beautiful beaches, and for good reason, for many this is the beach of their dreams, white sand and shallow waters with a desert backdrop that remains mostly untouched. Swimming, wading and snorkeling were excellent options at Corralito, which was the location of our delicious ceviche lunch- courtesy of Rodrigo.

Our time fell too short in La Paz, but it’s incredible to think back at our experiences. I can highly recommend booking with Rodrigo and Cesar as more than just tour guides, but as friendly local experts with a passion for making a difference.

Sarah and I spent the rest of our time exploring, relaxing and learning about the original inhabitants of the islands. It’s believed the Indigena occupied the area as far back as 10,000 years, but no one knows for sure. They slept without shelters and were completely naked when the first settlers arrived. They put up strong resistance to the Spanish and thwarted several plundering efforts.

Another beach worth visiting, while in La Paz, is Balandra Beach, which is considered the most photographed beach in the world. Unfortunately, we didn’t make it to Balandra due to heavy rainfall and for the second time during our trip the streets flooded and the sewers opened.

We also stumbled across one of the foulest bars in all of Mexico. It’s called the Jungle Bar. I won’t go into too many details, but the bathrooms were some of the most colourful I’ve (still) ever experienced.

Our next destination was the colonial town of Patzcuaro, mainland Mexico, where it was fast approaching El Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

Reviews for "The Bustling Witch's Guide to Love Spells and Relationship Magick"

1. Emily - 2 stars - I was really excited to read "The bustling witch" because I love fantasy novels. However, this book was a huge disappointment for me. The plot was confusing and all over the place, with too many subplots that didn't add much to the main story. The characters were also flat and uninteresting, lacking depth and development. I found it hard to connect with any of them, and as a result, I didn't care about what happened to them. Overall, this book just didn't live up to the hype for me.
2. Mark - 1 star - "The bustling witch" is hands down the worst book I've ever read. The writing was terrible, full of grammatical errors and awkward phrasing. The dialogue felt stilted and artificial, making the interactions between characters feel forced and unrealistic. The descriptions were also lacking, leaving me with no clear picture of the magical world the author was trying to create. I struggled to get through the first few chapters, but eventually gave up because I simply couldn't stand it anymore. Save yourself the time and avoid this book at all costs.
3. Sarah - 3 stars - I have mixed feelings about "The bustling witch". On one hand, the concept of a bustling witch and a magical world was intriguing and had so much potential. On the other hand, the execution fell short. The pacing was too slow, with long stretches of nothing happening. The author also introduced too many new characters without giving them proper development, making it hard to keep track of who was who. While there were some interesting moments and ideas in the book, they weren't enough to save it from being just an average read for me.
4. Alex - 2 stars - I'll be honest, I really wanted to like "The bustling witch". The premise sounded exciting, and I was in the mood for a fun and whimsical read. Unfortunately, this book didn't deliver. The writing was mediocre at best, lacking the charm and wit I was hoping for. The plot was predictable and lacked any real surprises or twists. The magic system and world-building felt underdeveloped and inconsistent, leaving me with more questions than answers. Overall, this book just didn't capture my imagination or keep me engaged.
