Originally released in 2003, the transfer for this OVA is presented in its original full-frame aspect ratio. The encoding for this release eliminates the issues we had with the first volume and basically leaves us with a very clean and smooth-looking piece of work other than a few minor things here and there. During the episode, there’s some occasional aliasing where the lines start losing their smoothness and turn jagged but it’s a far cry from the first episode. Colors look good and maintain a solid feel even during the dark blacks and blues, cross coloration is pretty much a non-issue and the show is presented with the original opening and ending. At the end of it, a translated section of credits rolls as well.
Despite the controversy, Tarot: Witch of the Black Rose has managed to attract a dedicated fan base who appreciates the series' unique and audacious blend of elements. The comic has also received several award nominations for its art and storytelling, further solidifying its place in the industry. In addition to the main series, Tarot has also spawned spin-offs, merchandise, and even a Kickstarter-funded animated film. The continued success of the series indicates that there is a market for uncensored and boundary-pushing adult-themed comics.
