A rustic witch is a term used to describe a witch who embraces a more natural and simple way of life. This type of witch tends to focus on traditional forms of magic, relying on herbs, potions, and spells that are rooted in ancient wisdom. The rustic witch is often connected to nature and the earth, finding power and guidance in the natural world around them. They may have a deep knowledge of plants and their healing properties, using them in their magical practices to create remedies and potions. This connection to nature also means that they may have a strong affinity for animals and may even be able to communicate with them on a deeper level. Unlike other types of witches who may focus more on elaborate rituals and ceremonies, the rustic witch prefers a more simple approach to magic.
Rustic Witch Broom
Happy Fall my witches! Let’s kick off this spooky season with a ridiculously easy DIY that not only looks good, but smells good too!
Everyone knows witches love the crisp fall air and the best way to let everyone know you have a coven in your casa is with an authentic looking witch broom.
While there are plenty on the market you can pick up including several options available at the local big box Halloween stores, they’re predominately made of plastic and while they look good on the websites, when you see them in person they’re definitely lacking the magic that makes a true bristle broom (also called a besom) so special.
To make your own you will need:
- Long heavy branch to serve as your broom handle
- Sandpaper (if needed)
- 2 large cinnamon brooms (I grabbed mine at Home Depot for about $5 each)
- Thick heavy twine
- Zip ties
- Wire clippers or strong snips
The best way to start this project is by finding your broom handle. I managed to find mine while out on a nature walk deep in the heart of a little swampy area near my place where I release my orphan mice.
You want a handle that speaks to you and pulls you in. I found mine half submerged in a nasty patch of goopy mud. I noticed it because the bark had been removed and there was a nail driven through the top. Not only had it been pre-smoothed for me, but the length was perfect, just a little over 3 1/2 feet long. I am guessing someone had used it at some point as a hiking stick and then discarded it. Regardless of what the original purpose was, it called to me and I knew I’d found my broom handle.
I took it home, washed it off, pulled out the nail, and smoothed out a few little spots where it was a touch rough with my sandpaper.
Time to assemble my broom. First thing I did was lay out my supplies.
Make sure when you buy your cinnamon brooms that you grab the full sized ones. They should be about three feet long.
Using your snips, carefully snip off the twine that holds them together. You can either repurpose this twine for the project or if the pieces are too small, toss them and use fresh twine.
Measure your cinnamon broom bundle and find the halfway mark. Using a few pieces of twine, tie the bundle directly above and below the halfway mark.
Using your snips, carefully start cutting your bundle in half.
Repeat this same procedure with your second cinnamon broom. You should end up with four bundles of cinnamon broom, each tied at the top with twine.
The top halves of your broom bundles will be less “bushy” than the bottom halves so we’ll use those for the center of our broom bundle and we’ll put the bushy parts on the outside to help bulk it up and give it a nice full appearance.
Place your broom bundles around the base of your broom handle, making sure they cover at least 6 inches of your broom handle. Using your zip ties, loosely zip tie your broom bundles to your broom handle starting at the upper end of your bundle about 2 inches from the top. You want to zip tie it tightly enough that the bundles won’t fall out when you remove the twine holding the bundles together, but not so tight you can’t adjust the bristles as you want to give you the look you are going for.
Zip tie the bottom portion of your bristles approximately 3 inches or so below your first zip tie.
Once you are happy with how your bristles look, tighten your zip ties as tightly as you can and snip off the excess. You’ll want the zip ties so tight that they hold all the bristles together as well as to the handle of your broom.
Now take your twine and start wrapping your broom bristles. There are two ways to do this. You can cover up your zip ties with your twine, leaving it in place under the twine, or you can wrap your twine as tightly as you can just above your zip ties and then remove the ties when you’ve secured the bristles. It entirely depends on your own personal preference. To be honest, I used just the twine, tying it as tightly as I could and then snipping off the zipties once I was confident the twine would hold everything in place.
Secure your twine knots with a few drops of super glue and that’s it! Your authentic looking and very sweet smelling witch broom is now ready to be displayed!
Lean it up in the corner of your living room and fill your house with the sweet smell of the season, or take it outside to add that extra touch to your witchy display.
Just make sure whatever you do, not to let it fall over if you lean it on anything. That’s bad luck.

Rustic Witch Hat Tutorial
Our Halloween boxes have been out for two or three weeks, yet I didn't get the decorations up until today! What's wrong with me? Does anyone else feel like the holidays are are sneaking up way too quickly? I had to rush to create this rustic witch hat before the holiday was gone! I gave it a touch of Fall, so I'm hoping it can stay up a little past Halloween.
So, I did mention that my boxes have been out for a few weeks, right? The kids have been playing with the decorations and costumes, so not decorating on time hasn't been a total waste--just a total mess! (Yes, the kids have been digging in the costumes, so we've had our share of vampires, witches, and fairies running around the house.) The decorations are finally up now, and the boxes are put away. Phew!
And now, let's get going with the craft!
Rustic Witch Hat Topiary
Have you ever crafted with foam? It's so fun to work with. FloraCraft just came out with this cool Halloween ebook full of fun ideas for creating Halloween craft projects with foam. They asked me to pick one of the projects and recreate it with my own spin. I chose the witch hat topiaries. Click on the image below to download your own ebook and see all the fun ideas.
The original project was traditional, so I decided to shake it up and create a hat fit for a woodsy witch. Here's what you'll need to create one yourself.
Materials:
FloraCraft® Make It: Fun® Foam:
- 12" cone
- 3" disc and 7" disc
- Jute twine
- Wood dowel
- Orange FloraCraft® Simple Style® Decorative Mesh
- Craft Glue
- Glue gun and hot glue
- Brown felt
- Craft wire or cardboard
- Brown spray paint
- Fabric leaves
- Small stick
Begin by creating the top of the hat. Press the stick into the top of the cone, remove it, squirt in some craft glue, and put the stick back in place.
Starting at the bottom of the cone, draw a bead of glue along the edge of the cone. Lay the jute along the glue. Continue adding glue and pressing the jute into the glue as you wrap the jute around and around the cone. Continue gluing and wrapping all the way up the entire cone. (Turn on your favorite TV show and get comfy!)
When you get to the top, continue right around the top of the cone and onto the bottom of the stick. Don't you love that my stick is still green? It came from the tree that I pruned last week.
Now for the hat brim.
Cut identical circles out of two layers of felt. My circles are 7" in diameter, but I kind of wish I had made them a little larger. I wanted my hat brim to be bendable, so I put wire in between two layers of felt. If you don't care about shaping your hat brim, use cardboard in the middle instead. Glue the layers together. If your middle layer is wire, you'll need to clothespin the layers together while they dry. I was in a hurry, so I used a hair dryer to speed up the process.
Poke a hole through the center of the hat brim before you glue it to the top of the hat.
Prepare the base of your witch hat topiary by gluing your craft discs together and poking the wooden dowel through the center. I originally glued the discs together with craft glue, but I found that didn't work, so I switched to hot glue.
Take the base to a well-ventilated area and spray it with brown paint. I used the Glossy Wood Tone paint left over from repairing my daughter's scuffed shoes in this project.
Decorate the base with ribbon, fabric leaves, or whatever suits your decorating style!
Attach the brim of the hat to the top of the hat with hot glue, and then decorate it. I created my ribbon using orange Simple Style Decorative Mesh and a couple of fabric leaves.
Finally, put the hat on top of the topiary, and you're done!
If a topiary isn't your style, I think the hat's pretty cute on it's own!

1. Emily - 2 stars - I was really disappointed with "Rustic Witch." The story started off promising, with an interesting premise and a strong female lead. However, as the plot progressed, it became convoluted and confusing. The pacing was all over the place, and I found it hard to stay engaged. The characters lacked depth, and their actions often felt forced and unrealistic. Overall, I had high hopes for this book, but it fell short of my expectations.
2. Michael - 1 star - I couldn't finish "Rustic Witch" because it was so poorly written. The grammar and sentence structure were atrocious, making it difficult to follow the story. The dialogue felt stiff and unnatural, and the author seemed to rely heavily on clichés and overused tropes. The world-building was also lacking, leaving me with many unanswered questions about the setting and magic system. I would not recommend this book to anyone looking for a well-crafted and cohesive story.
3. Sarah - 2 stars - "Rustic Witch" had a lot of potential, but it failed to deliver. The main character was supposed to be a strong and independent woman, but she often came across as whiny and indecisive. The romance subplot was forced and seemed to detract from the main story rather than enhance it. The writing itself was average, with nothing particularly memorable about the prose. Overall, I was left feeling unsatisfied and uninvested in the outcome of the story.
