The Impact of the Predator Rune on Game Balance and Fairness

By admin

The Predator rune is one of the many runes in the popular online game League of Legends. This particular rune falls under the Domination rune tree, which focuses on burst damage and assassinations. The Predator rune is widely used by champions who excel at roaming and ganking, as it provides them with extra mobility and damage. When a player selects the Predator rune, it grants their champion the ability to channel for a few seconds before gaining a massive movement speed boost. This movement speed boost is activated by moving towards an enemy champion or structure, making it ideal for surprise attacks and quick engages. Once activated, the champion's next basic attack or ability will deal bonus damage based on their level and a percentage of their target's maximum health.

Predator (Rune)

Enchants your boots with the Predator active effect.

Channels for 1.5 seconds. You can move while channeling and the channel will be interrupted if you cast an ability or enter combat (except minions), putting the item on a 50% cooldown. Activating Predator will not break stealth.

Upon completion, grants bonus movement speed for up to 15 seconds. Grants 60% bonus movement speed for the first 1 seconds while moving towards enemy champions, until your next attack or damaging ability, which deals 40 - 120 (based on level) ( Adaptive ratio: +40% of Bonus Attack Damage or +25% of Ability Power ) bonus adaptive damage.

90 - 60 seconds Cooldown (based on level).

Note [ ]

In the circumstance that boots cannot be acquired (like Playing Cassiopeia ), the rune is exchanged with Electrocute.

If the bonus damage is triggered via an area-of-effect ability, it will prioritize the lowest-health target hit.

Patch History [ ]

Patch 10.14

Predator is still weaker than expected, so we’re continuing our fine tuning. Giving it some boosts to help it compete with other keystones.

DAMAGE GROWTH : [30-90] ⇒ 40-120
COOLDOWN : [100-70 seconds (levels 1-18)]
90-60 seconds (levels 1-18)

While delivering on an excellent fantasy, Predator often loses sights on its prey by having a difficult cast paradigm and unintuitive optimizations. We’re attempting to broaden it from its niche role on a few junglers to making it more of a standard initiation option.

COOLDOWN : [150-100 seconds]
100-70 seconds
DAMAGE : [60-180 (+0.4 bonus AD) (+0.25 AP)]
30-90 (+0.2 bonus AD) (+0.1 AP)
I’M GOIN, I’M GOIN : Active is no longer disabled for the first 150 seconds of the game.

RUN, RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN Upon completion, Predator now grants 45% bonus movement speed while moving towards enemy champions at a range of 3000, including enemy champions out of vision

CHANNEL INTERRUPTION Active is no longer interrupted if you cast an ability or enter combat (still has a 1.5 second ramp up time for damage effect and full movement speed)

CHARLIE, THAT HURTS Predator now only deals damage and ends the hunt against enemy champions. DURATION : [15] ⇒ 10 seconds

Look, a small usability improvement!

ZOOM : The monster burn effect of Hunter's Talisman and its upgrades no longer interrupts Predator's channel

v8.1
Addressing a few feels-bad parts of Predator.

Predator is still a bit awkward to use, so we're introducing some usability tweaks to make its activation more consistent and its proc more intelligent.

PARTIAL REFUND If Predator's channel is interrupted, 50% of the cooldown is now refunded

HUNT THE WEAK If Predator's bonus damage is proc'd via an area-of-effect ability, it will now prioritize the lowest-health target hit

ADRENALINE Predator's rate of movement speed increase is increased by 50% for the first second and a half of the effect. This is unlisted in the tooltip because if you're making decisions around it, you're probably overthinking things.

v7.23
Cooldown decreased.

Predator has a steeper learning curve than many of our other Keystone Runes because it’s an active effect. However, with such a long cooldown, players don't get to use it regularly enough to progress along that learning curve. Decreasing the cooldown serves two purposes: Giving players more room to experiment with and master Predator, while bringing it more in line with other Keystones.

COOLDOWN : [180-120 seconds (at levels 1-18)] ⇒ 150-100 seconds (at levels 1-18)

THE HUNT IS ON Enchants your boots with the active effect “Predator.” Predator to channel for 1.5 seconds out of combat to gain 45% movement speed for 15 seconds. Damaging attacks or abilities end this effect, dealing 60 - 140 (+0.4 bonus AD)(+0.25 AP) bonus adaptive damage.

COOLDOWN 180 seconds to 120 seconds based on level. Starts the game on cooldown and goes on cooldown if interrupted while channeling.

Keystone Rune guide: How to use Predator

What’s it do, what runes should you pair with it and who should wield it?

By Ryan Gilliam @RyGilliam Oct 30, 2017, 12:10pm EDT

Once activated, the champion's next basic attack or ability will deal bonus damage based on their level and a percentage of their target's maximum health. The Predator rune is particularly useful for champions who lack natural mobility or rely on sneak attacks. It allows them to swiftly move across the map, catching enemies off guard and quickly eliminating them before they have a chance to react.

Predator is a Keystone for stealth champions and assassins. It offers you a boot enchantment that lets you move very quickly and deal additional damage. If you’re able to take a brief moment and channel the effect, your enemies will be sorry the moment you catch up to them.

Let’s take a closer look at the Predator Keystone.

Predator rune

This makes it a popular choice for jungle champions who need to traverse the map efficiently and exert early pressure on various lanes. In addition to its mobility and damage benefits, the Predator rune also provides a psychological advantage. The sight of an enemy champion charging towards them at incredible speed can create panic among opponents, leading them to make rushed decisions or even retreat without proper consideration. This psychological impact can significantly disrupt the enemy team's coordination and provide a strategic advantage to the player utilizing the Predator rune. However, like all runes, the Predator rune has its limitations and weaknesses. Its long channel time before activation leaves champions vulnerable to counterattacks or crowd control effects. Additionally, the high movement speed boost is temporary and may not be as effective in longer team fights or extended chases. Timing and coordination are crucial when using the Predator rune to maximize its effectiveness and secure kills. Overall, the Predator rune is a powerful tool for players who prioritize mobility and burst damage. Its unique ability to grant champions an unexpected burst of speed and damage can turn the tide of battles and catch enemies off guard. Whether it's a swift gank from the jungle or a surprise engage in a team fight, the Predator rune is a versatile and impactful choice for those looking to dominate their opponents in League of Legends..

3. Alex - 2/5 stars - I had high hopes for "Predator Rune," but it failed to meet my expectations. The game lacked originality, and the missions felt repetitive and monotonous. The combat system was unbalanced, with enemies being too easy to defeat or overly difficult without any middle ground. The lack of innovation and depth made the game feel like a cheap knockoff of better RPGs out there.

The graphics and sound design were decent, but the gameplay mechanics were clunky and frustrating. The storyline had potential but failed to hold my interest due to poor pacing and lackluster character development.
