Why Is A Mascot Getting Hurt Funny?

Mississippi State mascot Bully was hit by an ESPN golf cart during yesterday's Ole Miss-Mississippi State game, injuring the leg of the person inside. The photo you see is Bully, still fully costumed, wearing an air cast and being taken away in a stretcher.

The student inside Bully had surgery for a compound fracture Thursday night, according to SB Nation .

OK, this is not funny. This should not be funny. I should not be thinking about how Bully's frozen, anguished face accurately reflects the injury sustained by the person inside of it. This isn't—dammit, why is it funny?

On a serious note, may the person inside Bully experience a quick, easy recovery from injury. But let's look at the big question: Why is it amusing when a mascot gets hurt? Maybe I'm the only sociopath, but mascots that experience non-serious injuries are humorous. Let's be clear that I'm not wishing for more mascots to get hurt for my amusement, but sometimes, it happens. It's a workplace accident.

For example, remember Rocky, the Denver Nuggets mascot from the beginning of this month, who was unconscious while getting lowered in a harness to the court in front of scores of fans? Once I found out Rocky was all right, I could not stop watching the GIF. I started playing this song from The Dark Knight Rises behind it because it matched so well. And the cheerleaders! The cheerleaders dancing around as his oversized shoes met the floor and the people around him slowly realized that something wasn't right with Rocky.

Denver Nuggets fans got the rare opportunity to see what appeared to be a lifeless person dressed as a mountain lion lowered from the rafters. Rocky the mascot, passed out as he was being lowered during Friday’s pre-game introductions. When he reached the court, he collapsed and laid on the floor. Later in honor of Rocky, the Nuggets also collapsed, losing to the Trail Blazers 113 – 98.

At halftime of Thursday’s Broncos-Cardinals game, played in Denver, the crowd was entertained by a youth football game. Also on hand were several mascots, including Rocky.

It sends a message of violence that I believe should not be promoted, especially in a family-friendly sports event. I also found it insensitive to those who have experienced head injuries or have loved ones who have suffered from them. Overall, I was disappointed by this performance and would not recommend it.

I attended the game where "Nuggets mascot unconscious" was performed, and I have to say, I was not impressed. I understand that mascots are meant to entertain and engage the audience, but I don't think depicting violence is the way to do it. The act of knocking a mascot unconscious left a bad taste in my mouth. It wasn't funny or entertaining; it was just uncomfortable to watch. I believe there are much better ways to entertain the crowd without resorting to such a tasteless display.

I attended a game recently where "Nuggets mascot unconscious" was part of the halftime show, and I was utterly disappointed. I found it extremely inappropriate and offensive. Depicting violence, even in a comedic context, is not something I find entertaining or suitable for a sports event. I believe it sends a wrong message, especially to young children who may be in the audience. I would advise the event organizers to reconsider this act and choose something more family-friendly and positive for future games.
